  • Ohio Department Of Natural Resources
Researcher, Division Of Natural Areas And Preserves
Ohio Department Of Natural Resources Feb 2013 - Sep 2017
    Columbus, Ohio, Us
I began full time in 2013 again with the ODNR Division of Natural Areas and Preserves providing a wide variety of support functions for the state nature preserve system. Throughout my time with ODNR I continually took on new and increasingly important responsibilities, eventually working with projects for the newly created ODNR Division of Park and Watercraft.Upon hire, I was tasked to work directly with field managers, making recommendations for invasive species management on each preserve in the northern half of Ohio. During this time, I initiated the entrance of the Division of Natural Areas and Preserves to the Crooked River Weed Management Area. I was also responsible for reviewing ODNR departmental environmental review projects and providing comments when projects had potential impacts with Ohio threatened and endangered plants. As needs shifted, I began to work once again as a rare plant botanist, completing vegetation surveys updating completing both Ohio EPA ORAM and VIBI assessments for wetlands across the Lake Erie region. I also surveyed for rare plants across Ohio to update the Ohio Natural Heritage Database. During my entire tenure, I also served as website coordinator for the Division of Natural Areas and Preserves. I worked with our communications staff to build a completely new website for the Division of Natural Areas and Preserves, updating information for preserves and developing new websites for preserves and providing photos. As a part of this duty, I also managed the Division of Natural Areas and Preserves Facebook page, growing it from a community of 1000 to 12000 users today, routinely reaching 10,000 users each week. Finally, in 2016, I added responsibilities of annual newsletter coordinator and e-newsletter coordinator. I was the managing editor for both the 2016 and 2017 newsletters, developing story ideas, editing the ideas, gathering and collecting photos, and working with the artist to distribute 20,000 copies of each.
  • Ohio Department Of Natural Resources

I began with the Division of Wildlife by completing a multi-year study of rare plants across the Lake Erie watershed during the field season of 2010 that I brought with my previous position at ODNR. I also served as a vegetation data collection technician in support of an Ohio-wide grassland bird survey. In 2011, I transitioned my field biology skills to bird identification, and began conducting grassland bird point-count surveys at grassland wildlife areas across Ohio. My bird identification skills developed to the point where in 2012 I was given a North American Breeding Bird Survey route in Licking and Muskingum counties that I continued to run today (2017).In addition to bird point count surveys, I participated as a technician in a project to trap Northern Bobwhite at Tri-Valley wildlife area, equip birds with radio collars, and track them using radio telemetry. I also trapped and banded mourning doves, and served as a white-tailed deer check station attendant.During the winter season, I used my GIS skills for a several Division of Wildlife research projects. I utilized aerial photograph interpretation to digitize habitat types around each bird point count location. I also completed a major project to create dozens of new maps for DOW roadside bird surveys- namely pheasant, woodcock, and Northern Bobwhite.
