Projectionist/Assistant Manager
I first started working at the Malverne Cinema as just another part-time worker, where, depending on the shift, I would either work at the box office where I would be tasked with opening the box office at the beginning of each day, selling tickets, taking out the trash and closing the box office at the end of each day or I would work at the concession stand where I would be tasked with opening the stand each day, counting our inventory, cleaning the theaters and bathrooms, making popcorn, restocking items and at the end of each day, closing and cleaning the concession stand and making sure the bathrooms were clean. The managers at the theater were deeply impressed with my commitment to the job, especially my ability to cover for people when they couldn't do their shifts, my ability to communicate with them when I can and can't work, and always being on time for my shift. Because of this, I was promoted to being a projectionist in October of 2020, where I would be in charge of turning on the projectors at the beginning of each day and turning them off at the end of each day.A year later, in November 2021, I was promoted to becoming an assistant manager, in which I was given the keys to the building. At least a couple of times a week, I am entrusted with opening up the building, deactivating the alarm, and opening the safe to take out the cash drawers for both the box office and the concession stand at the beginning of each day. At the end of each day, I tally all of the revenue for the day from both the concession stand and the box office, sending the daily reports on the theater’s earnings to the owners via email, turning on the alarm, and ensuring the theater as a whole is secure by closing and locking the doors and securing the cash drawers by locking them in the safe before the day is over.
District Office Intern For Rep. Grace Meng'S Flushing Office
In my role, I was in charge of greeting any visitors, helping answer any questions they have, referring them to the appropriate caseworker, and logging their cases into the office's system after checking to see if they live in Rep. Meng's district. This internship was a valuable experience for me because it gave me the opportunity to learn more about how congressional offices on the district level operate and interact with constituents. One of the most important things I have learned from this internship is that members of Congress need to consistently attend events on their districts/states to show that they are not just representing them to win votes. I also learned the importance of a congressional office being able to adequately address the needs of a community. For example, New York’s 6th congressional district has a huge Mandarin-speaking population so many of the caseworkers and interns are fluent in Mandarin so that they can adequately address the concerns of that community.
Contributing Writer For The Torch
Since I had my first article published in the Torch in September 2020, I have written several essays for the site relating primarily to American politics. I have written articles on the filibuster, the 2020 U.S. Presidential Election, and the 2020-2021 Georgia Senate Runoffs. I have also written about topics other than American politics, such as an essay on how the media portrays people with autism, an essay in which I urge readers to get the COVID 19 vaccine, and an essay published in September of 2020 in which I urged then New York Governor Andrew Cuomo to reopen movie theaters.
Intern Reporter
It is a virtual internship where I was assigned to write any articles the editor-in-chief assigns me. On a weekly basis, I was assigned to write a list of things that are happening in Queens throughout the week and a list of houses for sale in neighborhoods such as Maspeth and Ridgewood. I have also even pitched my own stories. Here are a few links to what I believe are some of the best articles I have written for the site thus far:https://qns.com/2022/06/what-you-need-to-know-primary-election-queens/ https://qns.com/2022/07/ramos-blasts-ocasio-cortez-on-twitter/ (Co-wrote with Jenna Bagcal)https://qns.com/2022/08/q-e-d-astoria-more-than-just-a-comedy-club/https://qns.com/2022/08/analyzing-some-of-the-most-competitive-queens-races-ahead-of-aug-23-primary-election/https://qns.com/2022/06/new-york-lottery-winning-take-5-ticket-corona/
Intern For Laura Gillen For Congress
During my internship, I phone banked potential voters and reminded them about the upcoming midterm election, and asked them if they intended to vote for Gillen, the Democratic candidate for New York's 4th Congressional District, and other Democrats on the ballot like Senator Chuck Schumer and New York Governor Kathy Hochul. I also went out and canvassed to inform voters face-to-face about the upcoming elections and even gave some of them information on where and how they can vote. Like the Lafazan campaign, this experience had a huge impact on me and my future career goals and it also made me want to pursue legislative internships in the future.
Intern For Josh Lafazan Congressional Campaign
As an intern for Josh Lafazan's campaign for the Democratic primary for New York's 3rd Congressional District, my main job was to either call a select list of registered Democrats in the District to promote Josh's campaign or to go out and canvass with other interns to knock on doors and tell voters about Josh. While Lafazan didn't win the primary, this experience had a huge impact on me and my future career goals and I am honestly thinking of working on more campaigns because I really like talking to voters and listening to their concerns!
Virtual Reporting Intern
During this internship, I had the opportunity to work on my own stories that BronxNet TV would put on their website and Youtube channel. I had two packages that were ultimately uploaded on their Youtube page, including an in-person shoot I did at the weekly Bronx Night Market.
