★ I am currently working contracts from my base in Vancouver (not taking new ones one as of 2023). ★ Many global clients (including US ones) do not have to pay any sales (or other) taxes to Canadian contractors. Some Canadian companies may not; please inquire. ★ I am available for site builds, new features, site maintenance, and general technical consultancy. I will give you an honest assessment as to whether we’re a good fit; I’m not seeking to take on every possible client. ★ Clients can get backup coverage from other developers that I work with. ★ My contracts have included WordPress, Drupal and custom builds.

★ This contract fell under my web development consultancy listed above, but is featured here since it was especially long and substantial. ★ I managed all aspects of this multi-million dollar, 60 employee charity's web presence as the sole developer. ★ I developed, maintained and ran multiple websites, from the main site at GFI.org (which ran on a custom PHP/MySQL CMS that I inherited) to several WordPress sites such as GoodFoodConference.com. ★ Pixel-perfect implementation of several sophisticated designs created by GFI's design team. These included interactive features and animations. ★ I developed and maintained integrations with several services, including Salesforce, Funraise and Greenhouse.

★ I founded this start-up non-profit in Vancouver, which (later) grew to a 16 person team, and renamed to Rethink Charity (under which name it can be found online; it was originally called .impact). I served on the board through the latter process, and before that was the first Executive Director. ★ Given my skillset, .impact’s projects tilted to ones heavily involving web development, but as Executive Director I also had other responsibilities; the technical projects are listed here. ★ As my first project, I used my development skills to build EAHub.org, the most technically ambitious website in the effective altruism space. I was able to build this in 2 weeks of work, leveraging Drupal modules and custom code. ★ I maintained and extended Effective-Altruism.com, a fork of Reddit’s Python codebase. ★ I later employed another developer, and supervised his creation of EffectiveAltruism.org.au, which included a custom system for taking donations and managing them in the Drupal backend.

★ I was one of the 4 original employees for this start-up non-profit, which grew to a multi-million dollar enterprise with a 21 person team. I managed a team of 5 full-timers during a period of rapid growth. ★ I oversaw and did much of the early operational work for this growth; the Operations Division managed financial & legal matters, human resources, IT, and all other business administration. ★ My division also covered web development for this non-profit’s websites, at the time TheLifeYouCanSave.org, GivingWhatWeCan.org, 80000hours.org & EffectiveAnimalActivism.org. I did substantial work on 2 of these, including initial builds, rebuilds, and managing another developer.

★ I was a co-director of this 25 person business, involved in all management decisions. ★ I did ongoing development of its online magazine (using entirely custom code in the Bricolage CMS) and online shop (using Magento, writing several custom modules). ★ I handled all other technical requirements, such as interactions through their subscription fulfillment provider using web services.

★ My primary responsibility here was web development; a small fraction of my time also went to editing this online magazine. ★ My main project was planning, agreeing on and building a major new version of the magazine’s website, near totally rewritten in Drupal 6 (previously Drupal 4). ★ Working closely with the Publisher, I created a design with a professional designer, then coded a Drupal theme to implement it. ★ I built several custom Drupal modules. ★ I handled sysadmin for our self-managed Apache server when it went down.

★ I built and managed the ModernLiberty.net website, which involved a moderately ambitious custom WordPress theme/module combo.
