Research Intern
I was a part of prof Jyh Jeuan Lee's lab working on cholesterol transport mediated by the ABCG5/G8 transporter. My project involved inducing mutations around the sterol binding sites, as well as inducing mutations of residues in the newly discovered by JYL's lab conserved motif of Phenylalanine Highway.I have been designing primers and using them in site-directed mutagenesis according to SPRINP method (described in Edelheit et al 2009). I have been using E.coli XLI Blue strain to clone plasmids and then transforming them into P. pastoris yeast cells to express mutated proteins.Other activities I was involved with included carrying ATPase assays on already purified ABCG5/G8 mutants and shadowing big-scale cell culture growth, heterodimeric protein purification, membrane prep, and nanodisc preparation.
Student Representative
I was representing Year 3 MSci students during Student-Staff Liaison Meetings of the School of Biological Sciences. I was most involved with issues concerning examination timetable and format. With other representatives we were able to resolve many overlapping problems, as well as we urged senior staff to extend examination time. We also worked with lecturers to ensure the fairest deadlines for the hand-in of bigger assessments such as Literature Reviews, to make them comparable to previous years.Along this, I was tasked with a few other representatives, to moderate a novel student-staff communication platform - UNITU. We were successfully gathering complaints and praises for the organisation of Year 3 for the BSc and MSci cohorts and mediated discussions between two parties.
