Tomasz is a molecular biologist fascinated with the origin of life and the applications of synthetic biology in research and space exploration. His passion is driven by the field of Astrobiology.Tomasz graduated from the Department of Genetics of the University of Warsaw in Poland. Throughout his Ph.D. in the Polish Academia of Sciences, his study focused on neurodegeneration - specifically on prion disease. After discovering astrobiology late in his career, he decided to shift his research toward protein aggregation in the context of evolution and the origin of life. His postdoctoral research at NASA Ames Research Center and Stanford University led to the discovery of prion-like proteins in Archaea. Tomasz is strongly engaged in the astrobiology community. He is a member of the Blue Marble Space Institute of Sciences and the funder of the Polish Astrobiology Society. As the president of the Polish Astrobiology Society, Tomasz organizes multiple outreach events, including the annual astrobiology conference Life and Space. His goal is to provide low-cost access to high-quality astrobiology research and networking. Tomasz was also one of the founding scientists of Silicon Valley-based startup Switch Bioworks, which uses genetic engineering to create sustainable biofertilizers to help feed the world sustainably.
