I spent 12 years with 3 different companies in the software industry. I cut my technology teeth with a company, Symbiont, Inc. where I was part of a team for a start-up software product, called TRIMS (Transformer-Related-Management-System). It was promoted into the electrical utility market and was designed to aid the transformer shop with tracking distribution transformers and like equipment form purchasing, repair, obsoleteness to final disposal. Prior to joining Symbiont, Inc. I had spent a number of years in the energy market and had a vast rolodex of contacts which helped in being successful in getting the system into a number of municipal utilities and also large investor own utilities such as Virginia Power, Colorado Power and Baltimore Gas & Electric.I worked for InfoScan for about 6 years as a sales rep selling a warehouse management system and also barcode hardware such as scanners, printers, and wireless networks. Billable services included programming, installation, training and support. This was during the dotcom bubble and dotcom bust so they were interesting times.Tecnomatix was a 4 year venture in software systems that benefited and supported the PCB (printed circuit board) manufacturing industry. I covered a 7-state territory and was able to maintain quotas from $1.2 million to my last year at $3 million. The 2 main systems were NPI (new product introduction) which merged a BOM and electronic CAD into a program for supporting multiple robotic machines such as chip shooters, pick & place and testers. I also sold a quality and defect tracking system that aligned with six sigma and lean manufacturing. The company went through 3 mergers and many changes in management and sale methodologies which required everyone in sales to keep their head on a swivel. I got to see firsthand how the USA electronics industry couldn’t relocate their manufacturing plants to China fast enough.

I spent 11 years with 2 companies in the energy and environmental industry. The market revolved around electrical utilities and heavy industry such as mining, steel mills, pulp & paper and anyone that maintained a transformer substation. Between the two companies, it allowed me to travel to and either secure business or at least a sales meeting in every state in the USA other then Rhode Island and Connecticut. I started with National Electric, which was a small company that ran by the seat of its pants. It was later purchased by Westinghouse. I went from doing whatever the customer wanted to have to wait till the legal department reviewed and crossed T’s and dotted I’s. As a sales manager, I had to have knowledge in EPA regulations, transportation & rigging services, electrical equipment, and overall power distribution. The environmental division of Westinghouse was Aptus, however, after a few years, Westinghouse decided to shut that division down. I was able to gain employment with a competitor and spent 7 years with SD Myers. The travel was extensive but very enjoyable, I got to see many things such as doing job walks at Los Alamos Labs, Kennedy Space Center (saw the shuttle blast off), Paramount Studies, Steel mills, forging foundries, copper and silver mines, and an atom smasher at Stanford Linear Labs. While at SD Myers I was trained in transformer oil analysis and presented maintenance programs which is now known as predictive maintenance.
