TOM BEWICK is a British educationalist, consultant, policy adviser, journalist and academic. He has more than 25 years of experience working at the forefront of post-compulsory education and training policy and practice, initially as a post-16 adviser to the UK government, between 1997 and 2002; and latterly in both the UK domestic and international arena. As CEO to five boards since 2004, Tom Bewick has been responsible for several high-profile initiatives. He was the architect of the UK-wide sector skills councils (2001-2010); and he represented the UK awarding bodies for 5 years (2018-2023), securing changes to apprenticeship assessment and qualifications reform. As visiting professor of skills and workforce policy at the University of Staffordshire, Prof. Bewick has recently completed writing an academic book: ‘Skills Policy in Britain’, to be published by Bristol University Press/Policy Press in 2025. He is the author of a number of reports and articles, exploring apprenticeships, skills and productivity.Tom lives in Gloucestershire, with his partner and three teenage children. Tom comments: "It meant the organisation had been made redundant before I even started."Despite this EUK was run on a budget £2 million less than in the previous year and yet still successfully managed to ensure Global Entrepreneurship Week and Tenner were the best campaigns ever. Moreover, over £750K was left over in charitable reserves giving the remaining trustees the flexibility to award the funds to whom they wanted. -
Chief ExecutiveCreative And Cultural Skills May 2004 - Feb 2010Set up from scratch with chairman (Lord) Tony Hall CBE, chief executive of the Royal Opera House, and Director-General of the BBC. Duties included developing a compelling vision for the UK's creative and cultural industries: providing strategic leadership of the company; reporting to a chairman and board of trustees; and day-to-day operational management of the company, supported by a senior management team. After inheriting no financial reserves, CC Skills increased and diversified its income by over 300% to £6 million per annum, leaving a surplus of £1.8 million in financial (unrestricted reserves) by 2010; The skills council introduced the first ever industry recognised, government supported Creative Apprenticeship scheme, winning approval of a £15 million state of the art National Skills Academy in the Thames Gateway linked to a UK-wide specialist training network; and launched Creative Choices°– a £2.5 million online portal – the UK’s first careers website for the creative industries to fully exploit online social media and user-led careers support.
