About Thomas Bowman
I lead Scientific Affairs for Vytalogy Wellness, which includes the popular dietary supplement brands, Natrol and Jarrow Formulas (products include vitamins, minerals, probiotics, standardized herbal concentrates, amino acids, enzymes and enteral nutrition products). My responsibilities include initiating and cultivating global scientific research on our products, innovating new product formulation, research and development, label claims substantiation, coordinating with regulatory and legal compliance, science writing, and public speaking. My scientific expertise is in clinical and pre-clinical research in physiology, biomechanics and in lipid metabolism and gastrointestinal-liver physiology research.My prior clinical career included 10 years in podiatric medicine with clinical foci of diabetic limb salvage, sports medicine, biomechanics, and surgery of the foot and ankle. After I sold my clinical practice, I earned my PhD in 2010 at the University of Toledo, College of Medicine in the laboratory of my advisor, Dr. Sonia Najjar, an expert in insulin clearance and liver insulin resistance. In December 2015, I completed 5 1/2 years of research as a postdoctoral fellow sponsored by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, a branch of the National Institutes of Health, while in the obesity metabolism laboratory of Dr. Andrew Greenberg, a lipid droplet expert at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University, in Boston. In Dr. Greenberg's lab I utilized transgenic mice to study lipid droplet proteins and to determine the effects of enzymes of fatty acid activation and utilization on metabolic physiology, which included insulin-glucose homeostasis, body morphology, and serum biochemistry. I also gained knowledge in new science initiatives in bile acid homeostasis, the gut microbiome, fat soluble vitamins, incretin hormones, and lipid and energy metabolism.
