About Thomas Byford

I am a Qualified PE Teacher who wants to promote a healthier lifestyle and cultivate a working environment in the classroom that is personally rewarding, challenging and fun. I believe I have a strong ability to push my students to be the best they can be and in my short career of teaching thus far I have achieved some great District, County and National results. Physical Education, however, has so much more to offer young children than just sporting success. I always try to encourage my students to be open minded of the benefits sport can have in today’s world.

I am now Head of Boys PE at Beauchamps High School and look to continue to inspire students to work hard and be proud of their results as a result. Extra-curricular success is a big motivation for me and I aspire to build on the county and national success I’ve achieved here at Beauchamps so far. This course is an incredibly interesting one with many practical aspects to it that are challenging and very self rewarding for both myself and my students.

At the start of 2018 I took on the role of being a Coach for U15 Essex Schools Football Team. I’ve always wanted to challenge myself and coach the best players possible and be part of their development. In my first year in the role I’ve managed to identify some talents that weren’t in the squad in previous years and help develop the teams style of play in particular their pressing tactics. The squad assembled is exceptionally talented and as a result I managed to guide them to their first silverware as as a team as they won both their Regional league and Cup competitions.I look forward to working with the very best footballers in the County in future years and continuing to improve their game to help them reach their aspirations within football.

  • United Through Sport
    Community Volunteer Sports Coach
United Through Sport Jul 2017 - Aug 2017
    St Lucia
Since my ventures in America I’ve always wanted to test my educating skills abroad again but this time I wanted to explore a more challenging environment, one that isn’t privileged with facilities and kids that are eager to participate. I, therefore, took it upon myself to save up some money in my first training year so I could pay to fly out to the Caribbean and volunteer to a coaching programme for a month. This was a real eye-opening experience for me as I coached various sports surrounded by complete poverty. The variety of needs of the children was like nothing I had ever experienced as the summer camp attracted a range of abilities, social classes and learning difficulties varying from dyslexia to autism. This was a challenge for me as I hadn’t catered for learning difficulties before this experience and the other children due to their lack of education didn’t understand these children’s actions. It was here I learnt how influential differentiation is to learning as I had to try and cater for the differing needs of the children with as little equipment as two flat footballs and some wooden sticks for goals. However, throughout my experience, I managed to put on many successful sessions which lead me to be the head coach in my final weeks. Resultantly, this experience has equipped me with an extensive set of differentiation techniques, an improved knowledge of how to teach children with learning difficulties and a very good tan!

This has really helped me to further my educating skills in sports that I haven't had much experience in and has helped me become a more well-rounded PE teacher.

  • Pinemere Camp
    Sports Leader
    Pinemere Camp Jun 2015 - Sep 2015
    Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, Usa
The past summer I worked in a Summer Camp in America, this was a challenging environment as I had to balance my responsibilities of being a counsellor and a football coach. Being a counsellor I had a group of 6 kids whom I was responsible for throughout the day, as well as being a football coach putting on sessions for a wide range of ages and skill levels continuously having to adapt on the spot to the changing needs of the group. Working at the summer camp also put me in some situations out of my comfort zones, this brought out my creativity and there was numerous times were we had to organise evening activities for the kids on the spot and because of my leadership, energy and enthusiasm I was able to put on some fun activities for the kids which in turn lead to some of these games being played throughout the summer. I built a real strong relationship with my Bunk I was responsible for throughout the summer and built a great rapport and empathy with them. I believe this was a great insight to what it’s like to be a teacher at the frontline of these kids development and resultantly have never felt such a strong sense of self worth at the end of the summer, when I witnessed how much of an influence I had on them all.
