I created an experimental tech-powered furniture retail concept with a storefront in the Mission, SF. It was a viability test (product, market, model, channel) of a technology platform for a secondary market for furniture & home goods. Read on for the full story, in the spirit of open startups...The concept was a marketplace for premium, non-new furniture (e.g. manufacturers' floor samples, home stagers' excess inventory, high-end consignment) with a hybrid online-offline store targeting a younger audience. The physical store allowed buyers to experience the furniture in person, but also sellers to get rid of their inventory immediately, with the push of a button (instead of, say, trying to sell on Craigslist). The format was weekend flash sales. We were open for 16 weeks in a 6,500 sqft pop-up store, paying month-to-month rent while I pressure-tested the financial models and logistical challenges of the full-scale version. I hired a team of 5 (three part-time, two contractors) and created a retail advisory team, not coming from that world myself. Over 10,000 customers came through our doors, and many more to our web store. I designed and built all the tech myself, basically mods to a Shopify storefront combined with some sexy in-store displays and tags, while inventory management and consignment tracking – a huge challenge with 10s of new SKUs every week – was a ton of Google Apps/Sheets code hacks that would make MacGyver proud.Ultimately I believe I proved that the business could be successful but only a) at large scale, and b) with a sustained hyper-focus on operations, eking out tiny efficiencies to improve net margins ad infinitum. Even though these challenges are super interesting, they aren't my passion, which is more around creating fabulous customer experiences. So, I shut it down.Timeframe: 6mo experiment, store open for 4Headcount: 5 part-time + myselfTotal revenue: $122KAnnual run rate (Nov): $609KLessons learned: priceless :)
