As the Chief of Staff at Channel 7 North Coast, I led our newsroom and made editorial decisions for 30-minute bulletins on weeknights. If you turned on the TV at 6pm on the coast, you probably watched a story produced by the team. In this role I could add to my journalism and reporting skillset. I learnt how to manage people, coach inexperienced members, liaise with external agencies and make critical decisions in an instant - there was nothing quite like having to reshuffle a bulletin the moment you go live!

This was my first "real" break into the media industry. When you think about it, getting to watch, write and talk about sport is ludicrous for someone who lives and breathes it. I was incredibly privileged to get this chance and it's where I learnt how to write, interview, present live, explain complicated information and work to the strictest of deadlines.

This was a great time. The Western Premier League is the premier football competition in Central West NSW. As the region's sport reporter I was covering matches whenever I could. This led to a wonderful opportunity of commentating their live streams. I provided play-by-play and colour commentary.

Working on the Shute Shield was an immense privilige. The rugby competition made an effort to play their games in regional NSW and they chose Orange and Mudgee. I was selected to be the broadcast host and sideline commentator for both fixtures. This meant introducing the show to an international audience, interviewing players and coaches, providing expert comments and analysis during the game and being the link between fans and the game they love.

This is where I harnessed my customer service skills in a more specialised area - shoes. From Adidas and Nike, to Timberlands and Dr Martens, I had to research each shoe on our shelves and understand the selling points.

Good old Big W! This was my first job. I started as a wide-eyed teenager ready to have a real job, and I left with skills I still use today. It's amazing how much you learn and keep using from retail. Things like timeliness, dealing with (difficult) people, working in a team, responding to direction, and more. So many of the attributes here are utilised 15 years later. It wasn't just a job restacking shelves and helping customers, it was setting me up for my professional career.
