BioMed Central are an online Open Access e-Publisher. We had 300 employees in the UK and a handful overseas. As the HR Manager, I was responsible for operational HR and implementing strategic HR initiatives. I was part of the Management Team for the company.We grew rapidly during my time with the company. I managed the in house recruitment function which filled 105 vacancies externally in 2012/13 at total cost of less than 6.5% of annual salary. 85% of roles were filled directly (i.e. non agency).Additionally I partnered with the Founder and Exec to create a people strategy, which led to a key focus of my role being to proactively seek to manage talent and reduce staff turnover. The success of this is shown by-voluntary turnover reducing from 28 to 21% in my time with the company-54 staff (almost 20% of perm headcount) moved internally into new positions in 2012/13.

uSwitch.com is an online price comparison site. I was HR Manager during a period of growth from 120 employees to 250, and then back down to 150 again.Initially when I joined I worked as part of a larger HR team, but gradually this reduced until I was the sole HR employee for the company, which gave me the opportunity to gain great experience of all operational HR (recruitment, management reports, payroll etc) as well as leading a number of business critical projects (eg redundancy programmes, "buying out" bonuses).uSwitch was acquired by another organisation early in 2010, so I worked to TUPE across employees to the new organisation.

AMS was a joint venture between BAE Systems and Finmeccanica (it is now wholly owned by BAE). I was hired on a fixed term contract as Maternity cover. During my first 6 months, I was employed in the Shared Services before being offered a role in the Comp and Ben team. I only moved on as I had already accepted a Grad role with Ford.The initial 6 mths gave me a grounding in what HR actually was (esp in a Unionised environment).
