  Tom leads the Calgary office Corporate Restructuring Group of Gowling. He practices in the corporate restructuring, insolvency and distressed M&A areas, representing borrowers, lenders, creditors, receivers, trustees, monitors and directors. Recent engagements include:- acting as co-counsel for Grant Thornton, the receiver and trustee in bankruptcy of Redwater Energy Corp., at the Court of Queen's Bench, the Alberta Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada, in Orphan Well Association et al v Grant Thornton Limited, where the Courts examined conflicts between the federal Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act and the provincial regulatory regime governing the oil and gas production industry in Alberta;- acting for MNP Ltd, the receiver and trustee in bankruptcy of Sydco Energy Inc. in the Court of Queen's Bench, where the Court determined that the Alberta Energy Regulator was not able to prevent a transfer of wells and facilities to a licensee in good standing;- acting for secured lenders in multiple receiverships of oil and gas producers - acting for Ernst & Young, the trustee in bankruptcy of Ivanhoe Energy, an oil sands developer- acting for Deloitte Restructuring, the receiver of Sekur Energy Management Corp., an E&P company- acting for a syndicate of lenders in a private restructuring of an oil and gas servicer- acting for the receiver of Surefire Industries, a heavy oil and gas industry equipment manufacturer- acting for secured creditors in their acquisition of RS Technologies in CCAA/ABCA proceedings- acting for CNOOC in its acquisition of OPTI Canada Inc. under the CCAA/CBCA- acting for a lending syndicate financing the exit of Trident Exploration and Trident Resources from the CCAA.Tom also assisted the Government of Russia in its bankruptcy reform and the Commonwealth of Independent States in drafting a model law for the bankruptcy of banks.
