I worked as an intern for Safechild Africa, an NGO based in Manchester which provides education, child protection, and advocacy for street children in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. Almost uniquely, Safechild Africa works directly with children accused of witchcraft, as well as offering street children a way to access an education they are often excluded from. I was responsible for the digital communications and social media profiles of the charity, including the use of Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter to promote the charity's message to the widest audience possible. I have experience promoting events using Twitter, as well as livetweeting ongoing events, alongside the use of Tweetdeck. I work closely with the Fundraising Officer and Fundraising Intern to promote planned fundraising events. The other aspect of my role involves using my research skills to support fundraising activities and the charity in general. I have been involved in identifying high net worth individuals for guestlist-only events, factfinding on street children and Nigeria, and an ongoing research project on the changing political situation in Nigeria and the state of street children, including those facing allegations of witchcraft.

I studied for an MSc in Biomedical Sciences, with my dissertation focusing on functional analysis of lncRNA. I completed a critical appraisal of the safety and efficacy of trichlorsan, an antimicrobial commonly found in products such as handwash. Other components of the course include an in-depth awareness of auditing and quality in a scientific context, a knowledge of many cutting-edge analytical techniques, and statistics. Laboratory experience gained from the course includes DNA extraction and purification, and performing and validating the MTT assay. Techniques I gained skills in include molecular cloning, transfection, culture of human immortalised cell lines, and qPCR. I gained experience in grant writing and COSHH assessments.

I achieved a 2.i in my Bachelors, with a dissertation focusing on neuroendocrinology/pharmacology. My course had an extremely broad base, covering subjects as diverse as microbiology (including epidemiology, virology, mycology, parasitology, and bacteriology), haematology, biochemistry, immunology, pathology, pharmacology and toxicology, and cell biology. I have experience of laboratory techniques in all of these disciplines, including general microbiology techniques such as streak plating, tissue fixation, sectioning, and staining, ELISA, and spectrophotometry, as well as extensive experience with microscopy. In my final year, I specialised in pharmacology, whilst continuing to study in-depth courses on medical genetics and the biology of disease, covering subjects such as ageing, diabetes, and cancer. During my 3rd year, I was both a peer mentor and the student representative for the 3rd year Phamacology group.

Helped develop an in-vitro testing system for male germ cell toxicity, combining the older technique of STAPUT cell separation with culture of male germ cells, the TUNEL assay, and immunocytochemistry. The data produced was presented on a poster at the 2012 British Andrology Society meeting, with myself as second author. My work during this time was funded by a £1500 bursary from the United Kingdom Environmental Mutagen Society.
