Working on embedded systems to prototype new sonar systems and signal processing algorithms.

As Lead Firmware Engineer I was responsible for the software running on the embedded system in the Vysk QS1. This enterprise product is a case for iPhones and provides protection against eavesdropping while also encrypting all audio communications. While debugging and enhancing the first generation code base, I am also advising on potential features and component selection in future products.In addition to these software duties I have built and coded specialized test equipment for use in the manufacturing line, analyzed failure mechanisms and recommended design improvements. I am also a member of Vysk's cross-functional team which ensures coordination of efforts between the various disciplines.

Developed demo software for a hybrid-mode (cable and IP data delivery) STB (set-top box). Demo used by customer at CES 2015. Continued support of other STB products including travel to field sites for problem resolution. One such trip required collection of encrypted video and the related network security messages so that I could later analyze them to determine the problem's root cause. My analysis led to improved testing at the organization which developed the network security protocol as well as improvements in the STB code base for more robust field deployment.

Responsible for supporting a major set-top box manufacturer. This involved writing new code, debugging existing code, and coordinating work by other software developers, both in-house and contract. Frequent trips to customer sites were required for system integration, testing, and inevitable emergencies. Awarded a bonus for getting a project back on track, in terms of quality and functionality, while working under a “stop ship” condition.Other accomplishments:Designed and implemented the conditional access (CA) system for a STB. Successful third party testing led to certification of the system, which was required for deploymentDeveloped custom applications for hardware validation.Debugging of firmware for hardware MPEG2/4 decoder.Integrating two distinct build systems.Performed some program management functions.(Position started with Conexant's STB group, which was purchased by NXP, which merged with Trident, and then was bought by Entropic.)

SensorTran develops temperature sensors utilizing fiber optics. They were a spinout from SPEC, my previous employer. I was one of 6 SPEC employees asked to move with SensorTran. As part of the spinout I specified and procured the complete IT infrastructure and phone system.As SW development manager, I was responsible for the design of the software which transitioned from a simple controller application into an enterprise level data collection and analysis product.I also collaborated with SensorTran scientists to improve signal processing algorithms. I improved manufacturing processes by providing utilities to automate and track the building and repair of SensorTran products. Additional responsibilities included supervision of 2 software engineers, ongoing IT support, and field support for customers.

Developed custom embedded software for specialized military SBIR programs:1) Non-lethal strobe for laser targeted missiles. I developed the algorithms and software to:a) Calculate the angle of an incoming laser signalb) Determine the necessary rotational positions of 2 Fresnel lenses that steer the strobe lightc) Control two 40000 rpm motors with an A/D board and a PID loop. This system was able to rotate the lenses to the calculated position within 100ms.2) Automated steering assistance for backing up large military cargo trucks. I wrote the host and embedded software for controlling the IR lasers and sensors. Embedded software was written for an Atmel AVR processor. The embedded sensors communicated, via an RS485 connection, with an Intel XScale RISC processor running Windows CE. Developed a custom communications protocol to auto detect the maximum useful baud rate for a given environment.

Member of a cross-functional team of software, mechanical, and electrical engineers developing a novel, kiosk-style, film processor. Added a diagnostic capability to the existing SW code base that supported system integration, manufacturing testing, and field service.

One of three software developers responsible for the processing and transmission of all audio and video data within the Meetrix desktop video conferencing system. Sole developer of a VoIP subsystem that enabled adding phone participants to the conference. Awarded patents for the unique network topology of this subsystem.

Member of the Professional Services group which was responsible for system customization and reliability for customer engagements. Product was a DSL-based STB (set-top box). Developed an on-board diagnostic capability that allowed automated testing of the STB without external controls. Was one of two engineers supporting the single active client.

Worked on ASF scanner technology for removing defects (e.g. scratches) in images. Helped develop core technology associated with reflective scanners. Developed image processing algorithms to perform image repair.(ASF later acquired by Kodak.)
