The CoreOps role is very multifaceted and colloquially known as "Virtu glue". It requires juggling many hats – working on short/long term tasks while communicating with and coordinating many different teams, and being the first responders to any issues that may arise with numerous critical systems in a high-pressure environment where outages and bugs can be very costly, as ~25% of retail market orders in the US are processed by Virtu.The role for the most part is a mix of DevOps and Site Reliability Engineering, specialized to maintain and help build out various components and clusters within Virtu’s trading systems. Some specific responsibilities include:– Building out new clusters (called "cores" at Virtu, hence the CoreOps title), which involves: > Working with systems/data center teams to request installation of necessary hardware. > Ensuring that network interfaces are set up to allows applications to communicate internally/externally properly. > Integrating it into deployment scripts and adding any other custom scripts necessary in accordance with its specific functionality. > Deploying applications in a way we saw fit based on a variety of factors, including server memory, numa node capacity, network traffic, and how the applications interact with each other. > Routine duties like troubleshooting, being on call for issues in the case of production clusters, updating stakeholders (devs/other teams relying on the new cluster's functionality) regularly, and adhering to tight deadlines.– Taking ownership of and being the go-to person for a handful of legacy systems in addition to the main systems where responsibility is shared.– Monitoring all the systems I'm responsible for via numerous GUIs, chats, and notifications.– Communicating with exchanges/other firms in outage scenarios and for setting up new connections.– Documenting processes for certain tasks to reduce the domain knowledge required to do them.
