As founder and lead Conversation Designer at labworks.io I spend my days trying to create the best voice games in the world. I manage a team of 6, answer hundreds of emails and make sure the bills get paid on time.I also act as the public face for the company, speaking at the major industry conferences and dealing with media requests.But, at heart, I'm still a designer and I love nothing more than getting really stuck into topics such as controlling a screen with voice, how many edge cases can you handle before it starts impacting your natural language model and whether persona is really that important.Sometimes, they even let me write things!

I helped the Cross-Government Service Data team to create an alpha product that provides standardised and comparable management information across government for Senior Civil Servants and Ministers.I helped the team agree their mission statement, name the product, define the metrics and test user understanding as well as producing all of the microcopy and supporting guidance documents.I also designed a new process for naming products that has now been shared across the UK Government and many other public sector bodies.

I worked on some products that never launched and a couple that did: Stories and Facebook for work. I wrote microcopy, helped teams choose the tone and language of their products and managed the naming process. I worked closely with design and engineering to ensure products felt like they were part of the overall Facebook brand. I designed feature onboarding flows and helped the research team to create user testing scenarios.I also pitched and designed a winning internal hackathon project which was considered for project funding before an existing team decided to incorporate it into their roadmap.

I led the content redesign of the pensions and retirement section in preparation for a change in the law. I compared the content offering against user needs, highlighted gaps and duplication and commissioned, wrote and edited new content. I worked with subject matter experts to ensure all content met legal requirements and fitted with the organisation’s overarching mission.

I acted as the editorial lead for the redesign of the website, defining cross-platform content needs and collaborating with the UX and development teams. I helped build an agile, user-centred working environment through the use of minimum viable products and extensive user testing. I trained and managed a team of digital content producers and ran Lonely Planet’s Google+ page.

While on a year abroad in Australia I worked as a freelance editor for Government magazine - a quarterly periodical focussing on economic and trade policy that is sent to every national politician in the country. As editor I worked closely with the design team to agree the flat plan and look of the content throughout the magazine. I sub-edited and proofread the entire magazine, often rewriting academic prose from technical experts into plain english while retaining a tone suitable for the magazine's demanding audience.

While backpacking around Southeast Asia and then while living in Australia I took on a variety of freelance jobs.Articles published included an investigation into the murder of an infamous Australian businessman and exploring Bangkok by tuk-tuk.I also sub-edited and proofread promotional materials for companies, annual reports for NGOs and copy for websites.

I originally went to the Phnom Penh Post as an intern but ended up as the acting Web Editor due to personnel changes that meant I was the only person with significant digital experience on staff. I worked with the News Editor, Picture Editor, Business Development Manger and Editor in Chief to restructure the paper's digital process and restore daily online publishing after several months of interruption.I helped the paper negotiate a new relationship with its external technology providers and provided training to empower interested staff to continue to operate the website after the end of my internship.

My role blended SEO, traffic management, CRO, support for microsite teams and updating the telegraph.co.uk homepage. I gained a thorough grounding in SEO techniques, optimising content to achieve higher rankings through rewriting titles, ensuring content keywords matched user searches and internal link building campaigns. I ensured that commercial campaigns received their required amounts of traffic by running editorially relevant traffic drivers across the site and on the homepage. I carried out data analysis and experiments on the site to highlight verticals with significant yield potential and traffic growth opportunities.

I set up The Vibe as a space for young people interested in politics to learn to write and to grow their written portfolio.The site eventually grew to provide comprehensive current affairs and cultural coverage aimed at recent graduates working in the NGO, Political and Media sectors.Before closing The Vibe was listed as one of the ten best independent political blogs in the UK by Total Politics Magazine.

I helped fundraise £3000 to allow a complete refit of the station's live studio and the creation of a new production studio where pre-recorded programming could be produced.I worked with the station executive committee to build on this new capability to drive up quality by using pre-recorded features to increase competition for live slots. We also reinstated the regular campus news bulletin, bringing listeners back to the station and building influence within the student union.I also reformed the governance of the station, shrinking the executive committee from 11 to six and streamlining decision making by increasing the autonomy of individual roles.
