Fueled by an interest in the sustainability challenges of the energy sector, I did a 4½-month-long internship at TenneT, a transmission system operator in the Netherlands and a large part of Germany. My main activities were related to the following topics: • Energy efficiency. I conducted a study into the underlying reasons for the unusually high energy consumption levels of several high-voltage substations, and identified opportunities for reducing energy use. • Circularity. In order to kick-start lifecycle thinking within the company, I assessed the waste flows produced by the demolition of a 110kV substation. Here, I collected data on the material composition of substation components (by asking suppliers for ‘material passports’), calculated the total volume and scrap value of the materials on the substation, and made recommendations for TenneT’s waste policies and practices.Other tasks included:• Assisting in writing the proposal for the opening session of the CIGRE 2018 convention on climate change.• Calculating the total mobility footprint of TenneT employees in the Netherlands and Germany (for the 2017 Annual Report).• Creating a CSR-themed puzzle for the 2018 TenneT Contractor Forums.

In partial fulfillment of my master curriculum, I did an internship at AkzoNobel, a global producer of paints, coatings and specialty chemicals. Working for the Sustainability department, my main tasks involved conducting AkzoNobel's RobecoSAM assessment for the Dow Jones Sustainability Index [DJSI], which helps to identify and measure leading global public companies on sustainability performance. Predominantly, I supported the company with competitor benchmarking, industry and policy analysis, text review, template development and data collection and consolidation. Achievements:• Together with my internship supervisor, I successfully coordinated the input from various parts of the company for the RobecoSAM CSA survey, helping AkzoNobel to ascend to 1ˢᵗ place in the 'Chemicals' industry group of the 2017 DJSI (see attachment).

Amsterdam And Wageningen

In the context of a consultancy project commissioned by the Amsterdam ArenA and carried out under the flag of the AMS Institute, I was part of a student team from Wageningen University that enquired into possible measures to make the various resource chains of the Amsterdam ArenA more circular. Focusing on the stadium's food, plastic and wastewater flows, we provided the Amsterdam ArenA with multiple solutions for each resource cycle. One of the main products of our research entailed a mockup newspaper for the UEFA EURO 2020 event (see attachment) describing how these solutions were implemented. Additionally, we presented our findings at the AMS Institute, at Europe by People's FabCity campus (to, among others, members of parliament) and at one of the Amazing Monday events hosted at the Amsterdam ArenA Innovation Center (AAIC).
