In 2016 as part of this lifestyle change I traveled with my family across the United States over 9000 miles, visiting 26 States, and 20 National Parks over 45 days. The Federal component of the Rhode Island Disaster Medical Assistance Team (RI DMAT) falls under the auspice of the National Disaster Medical System (NDMS) housed within the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response in the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Federally, RI DMAT is a level one DMAT with over 100 members. Typically, a Federal deployment of a DMAT team calls for the activation of a 35 member roster ranging from Administrative personnel to MDs for a two week deployment. RI DMAT has responded to every major disaster in this country since 1995. Members of NDMS are intermittent federal employees.

The Public Health Emergency Management Suite, or PHEMS, was developed as a result of theStation Nightclub fire in 2003. An evaluation after the tragedy highlighted the importance ofestablishing a more consistent system of communication among health care and public healthpartners.PHEMS is designed to provide improved situational awareness during day-to-day operations,planned events and large-scale disasters.The system is routinely used in private and municipal EMS transport vehicles, and in emergencydepartments, but can also be utilized by an Incident Commander or Transport Officer at thescene of an emergency, in the Rhode Island Department of Health Operations Center or the StateEmergency Operations Center or by federal partners who may be responding to an event ofnational significance.The Public Health Emergency Management Suite is made up of four modules, providing theabilities of bed capacity monitoring, critical messaging, patient tracking, and reporting.
