Profile bio

About Tom Lee

Born in South Korea, I moved to Rotorua, NZ in 1995 at the age of 2 and became a NZ citizen in 2012.I started working at Pak'n Save Rotorua at the age of 17. My strong work ethic was quickly recognised and I was promoted to manager of the frozen foods department within a year of starting. After 2 years in this role, I moved on to being a duty manager which was a step up in terms of responsibilities, but a job I thoroughly enjoyed. During my time at Pak'n Save, I covered for numerous other roles including ticketing and pricing, offsite storage, and chilled foods, often working 60+ hour weeks. While I was at Pak'n Save, I started studying NCEA Level 2 and 3 via correspondence school so that I could go to university. In 2017 at the age of 23, I started Health Sciences First Year at Otago University, a notoriously demanding and competitive course that dictates entry into medical school. Thanks to both good fortune and my dedication, I was able to achieve a score of A+ in all my papers and a 96% average, along with a UMAT score in the top 1%, allowing me to comfortably gain entry into medical school. At medical school, I have been actively involved as the Otago University Medical Students Association Vice-President and the NZ Medical Students Association Dunedin rep. I have also been involved with Korean student associations in various roles, reflecting my Korean heritage. During my years at university, I have also tutored extensively as both a hall tutor employed by the University and in a private capacity, mainly in physics and biochemistry. After completing the Officer Selection Board successfully in 2018, I was honored to be offered a position as a Medical Officer Cadet with the NZ Army. This means that I will start my 4 years of return of service as a doctor with the NZ Army in 2025.Having been a keen golfer since a young age, I started playing again in 2020 after an eight year break. In 2021, I came runner up in the year-long Otago Order of Merit and represented Otago as the No.1 player at NZ Interprovincials in Ashburton, where I had a record of 2 wins, 2 draws and 2 losses playing against other region's top golfers. In 2022, I am currently leading the Otago Order of Merit and ranked 10th in the NZ men's amateur ranking, with a handicap of -3.
