I am part of a R&D team that developed a spectrometer specifically for measurement of light emitting devices (LEDs) on printed circuit boards. We designed and built a small footprint spectrometer using novel mini-integrating spheres that allow accurate intensity and colour measurements to be taken of discrete light emitting devices. We are currently extending the range of accessories for different types of measurements.The team works with our customers to incorporate the spectrometer (and other Feasa Products) into their quality systems as a means of traceability. We provide metrology assistance when customers are involved in new product introduction (NPI).In high volume production, time is important and any interruption or delay is expensive. We pride ourselves on providing rapid technical assistance to customers in the form of on-site visits, video conferencing, remote access, phone support and email. Our relationships are built on the speed and strength of our support to customers.We consult with customers on effective metrology techniques when new boards use novel technologies or even complex layouts. When a board is designed it is designed with its function in mind, not how to test it. We provide the expertise between the optical metrology lab and the production floor.Through our customers, we are exposed to new technologies and novel applications of LEDs. In my 7 years I've estimated I've spent 12,500 hours measuring LEDs or other light emitting sources, with some of my colleagues having 10,000+ hours also.As part of my role as R&D engineer, I am charged with bringing technology developed in-house from the prototype stage to volume production stage. This involves developing the manufacturing processes, procedures, documentation and training of operators. The supporting production software must be developed and tested. We work in a cross functional team to determine the fastest smoothest transfer from the prototype lab to volume production.

I am involved in the ongoing development of a optic/electronic device (The Feasa LED Analyser) that is capable of measuring the relative intensity and colour of a light emitting diodes and other light emitting devices. I have been involved in the setting up of optical lab equipment, measurement standards, and improving the measurement capabilities of the device. We are active in novel ways of expanding the intensity range, and the output units of the device, through novel accessories.

From 2006 I have worked in the role of Photometery/Radiometery calibration engineer for a sister company Calibration Specialists Limited. This company provides calibration services within the island of Ireland. My primary role here is calibration of optical equipment, developing calibration procedures, documenting these procedure and the training of calibration technicians in the calibration procedures themselves.

At Feasa we have experience of plastic optical fibres (POF) and single mode glass fibre optics (SM). We were asked to develop a prototype glass fibre optic device. I worked to develop a prototype device that could be mass-produced for a particular price range. While significant progress was made, the current cost of materials did not meet the desired price range.During the course of the project, I developed hands on skills using SM fibre optics and fused fibre technology. I developed some fibre optic characterization techniques.I developed an ex-situ non-destructive stress measurement and am currently working on lifetime calculations based of these measurements.

The External Examiner Role (As decribed by Wikipedia, Jan 2019).In undergraduate examinations, external examiners typically see, and have to approve, draft examination questions before the papers are set; and they will mark the work, or review the marks, of at least a sample of candidates. They are often asked to adjudicate when candidates are on borderlines or when internal examiners have disagreed about a candidate's marks. Externals are expected to make a report both to the department and also to the university authorities; they have wide licence to comment on all aspects of the degree programme, including its staffing and teaching, not just on the examination process. Where viva voce examinations are still held as part of the final degree assessment, it is common for external examiners to take part in them. Students may have the right to ask for their work to be considered by the external examiner. External examiners are typically appointed for a period of three or four years, and it is common to consult them about changes to the programme that are being introduced during their period of office. In the case of undergraduate examinations in broad disciplines, there are commonly several external examiners with different areas of expertise on a board of examiners

During the academic year 2005 to 2006 I was approached to teach a group of students after the sudden sickness of their original teacher. At the time there was no replacement teacher available, and I was asked to fill in temporary capacity. This group of students had to sit their final state exam and it was important that they did not loose lesson time. My position was to be temporary, but I ended up teaching until the day of the official exam. This was high pressure position as I had responsibility for the student group. While I had the background in Physics and Chemistry, and significant teaching and training experience in a university environment, this was a new challenge. I was able to get assistance and guidance from my original second level teachers I was able to put together a program and start teaching.When the final results were received, our group had achieved an 80% honors level.

I worked in a new project to promote science learning within the University. We faced a problem of a high failure rate within the main science modules. As a result a special learning center was organized to facilate different learning styles. I was in charge of a group of 18 postgraduate tutors covering 21 modules of physics, chemistry, and biology subjects. Under my term attendance increased 120%. As coordinator I handled the logistics of timetabling, resource management, publicizing/promoting the center (within the university and outside of it), and teaching of physics and chemistry modules.

I carried out multiple-client surveys for international and English speaking regions for largest market research company in the Netherlands. For the duration of the work period, I was brought in new survey development and was involved in the testing and evaluation phase of new client surveys.

During the course of the degree programme, it is required that students go into industry for a term of 8 months.. In the course of my placement, I worked in the in the INTEL organization in the Quality and Reliability section of the Yield Department. Primary duties (40% of time) required day-to-day maintenance of the reliability records and monitoring of yield data from other process and attending quality meetings with other sections. The rest of the time (60 %) was spent in the calibration lab under the control of the Quality section.
