About Tom Mottram
I am a graduate chartered Mechanical Engineer with a wide experience of “hands-on” engineering and maintenance management, the installation of major projects and the organisation, planning and control of major maintenance shutdowns. I have developed a great deal of experience in the installation and management of Computerised Maintenance Management Systems and Condition Monitoring schemes for both mechanical and electrical plant and equipment. (Including Avantis, Maximo, Holistech, SAP)This experience has been gained in a variety of industries, including coal mining, the manufacture of lead/acid batteries, the production of cement, rotary kiln plants and mills, petrochemicals and the lime industry. In all my roles, improving reliability has been a key goal, because a reliable plant, is also a safe plant.I am also proficient in all aspects of interpersonal skills, team building and staff development.Projects include the installations of coal face equipment, conveyors, screens, loading systems, fuel handling plants, LEV equipment, and kiln firing equipment. Major shutdowns include kiln preheater overhauls and kiln shell section replacements, and overhauls of ball and vertical mills.I am always very keen on measuring and monitoring performance and keeping detailed records of work done, because, if you can't measure it, you can't manage it. And also, if you don't where you have been, how do you know where you are going?
Listed skills include Project Engineering, Engineering, Operations Management, Process Engineering, and 12 others.

My responsibilities included the ball mill plant for the grinding of chromium ore, and the two largest rotary kilns on the site. Show less
Oip/Reliabilty Project Manager
Just before the takeover of Blue Circle by Lafarge Cement, I joined a nationally based team to look at continuous improvement projects across the whole country. From this we developed the use of various alternative fuels and several reliability improvement projects. I was also project managing the installation of £2m worth of online continuous condition (vibration) monitoring systems (by Monitoring Technology Corporation) over five different sites (Dunbar, Hope, Cauldon, Westbury and Aberthaw)
Chief Mechanical Engineer
In 1995, I managed to join an industry I was keen to become involved in and joined Blue Circle Cement as Chief Mechanical Engineer at the Weardale Business Unit in County Durham. Within a few weeks of joining, I had helped to start the process of moving the whole company away from a dated, mainframe based purchasing, stores and maintenance management system to using Maximo, after being part of a team that looked at various options that were available at the time.
Maintenance Manager
After twenty years in the mining industry, I joined a Japanese company in South Wales, Yuasa Battery UK, who make sealed lead acid batteries. This was a completely different environment from my previous career, but whilst there I purchased a computerised maintenance management system (Matrix Impact) which was introduced across all the various production lines and injection moulding plant.
