In 2014 Steetley Dolomite was taken over by Lhoist, a Belgian based lime producer. Lhoist have a couple of European plants similar to our own so after a couple of visits I helped create a multinational team that was striving to standardise the expensive purchases of spare parts and equipment. (In particular on Polysius Lepol Preheater Systems)It now looks like time to move on again, as the problems affecting the steel industry have affected us badly, sales plummeted, and the kiln has been mothballed until hopefully trading conditions improve. My responsibilities include:• The management of all maintenance, including the supervision of craftsmen, control of expenditure, procurement of parts and labour, supervision of contractors, the organization of kiln shutdowns and recommissioning, to ensure the best practicable availability.• The management of projects including capital schemes from the initial concept, through development, design, procurement, contract management, commissioning and de-snagging.• To be actively involved in the general management of the works, in terms of ideas generation, continuous improvement projects, team working, problem solving, trouble shooting and budget preparation.• To manage the human resources under my control by motivation, administration, supervision, communication, training and development to maximize their contribution to the business and ensure their welfare.• To liaise closely with the rest of the management team, through meetings, reporting, communication, to ensure the safe and efficient running of the business.• To ensure that the works complies with all necessary health, safety and environmental policies and legislation, particularly in respect to PSSR, LOLER, COSHH and PUWER Regulations.• To manage the lubrication systems, resources and strategy.I also operate the Maintenance Management system (Holistech) to ensure work is done to time and correctly, and also logging kiln downtime. From this, I produce detailed KPI reports and highlight where action should be taken to improve performance.Regular plant shutdowns include changing the preheater chain every two years, a task that costs nearly half a million pounds. Other projects to improve performance and efficiency include the installation of a sizer to break lumps of product, eliminating waste and removing a serious safety hazard at the same time, new stone feed and kiln firing systems. I joined AMEC as a project manager in 2003. My first project was acting as an interim maintenance manager, representing AMEC on my own, on one site, the Petroplus Refinery on North Tees. While I was there I developed the use of the Invensys Avantis Computerised Maintenance Management system, and introduced condition monitoring on key rotating equipment. Just before the takeover of Blue Circle by Lafarge Cement, I joined a nationally based team to look at continuous improvement projects across the whole country. From this we developed the use of various alternative fuels and several reliability improvement projects. I was also project managing the installation of £2m worth of online continuous condition (vibration) monitoring systems (by Monitoring Technology Corporation) over five different sites (Dunbar, Hope, Cauldon, Westbury and Aberthaw)

Weardale

In 1995, I managed to join an industry I was keen to become involved in and joined Blue Circle Cement as Chief Mechanical Engineer at the Weardale Business Unit in County Durham. Within a few weeks of joining, I had helped to start the process of moving the whole company away from a dated, mainframe based purchasing, stores and maintenance management system to using Maximo, after being part of a team that looked at various options that were available at the time.

Ebbw Vale

After twenty years in the mining industry, I joined a Japanese company in South Wales, Yuasa Battery UK, who make sealed lead acid batteries. This was a completely different environment from my previous career, but whilst there I purchased a computerised maintenance management system (Matrix Impact) which was introduced across all the various production lines and injection moulding plant.

I gained a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Loughborough University of Technology.During my time with the National Coal Board and British Coal, I was responsible for the installation, testing, examination and maintenance of a wide range of underground equipment for the cutting and transport of coal, men and materials. During the late 1980’s I also helped to introduce condition monitoring and performance reporting systems, introducing the principles of Root Cause Analysis, that gave vast increases in reliability and productivity over a few short years.
