Profile bio

About Tom Williamson

I am a biomedical engineer with expertise in translational research and development, largely focused on the fields of medical robotics, image guidance and medical image & data analysis. I have a passion for developing and applying technology to help others, working closely with academic, clinical and industrial partners to solve challenging problems. I am currently employed as a research fellow at RMIT University, working towards the development of robotic solutions for the treatment of bone tumors. I was previously employed as a post-doc at Monash University building robotic solutions for non-invasive treatment of liver tumours, and completed my PhD in August 2015 focused on the development of a surgical robotic system for minimally invasive cochlear implantation, as part of a team achieving advancement of the technology to a world first clinical trial. My technical experience is primarily as a software engineer, particularly C/C++, MATLAB and Python, for robotic control, medical image analysis, device interfacing, algorithm development , statistical analysis and machine learning tasks. I am also proficient in mechanical and electrical design tasks. Throughout my career I have gained experience in the management and supervision of graduate engineers and postgraduate students as well as lecturing at a post-graduate level, publishing of scientific papers, patenting, presentation of research results at international conferences and commercialisation activities. I enjoy initiating and maintaining partnerships with clinicians and industrial partners to enable improved technological solutions to challenging clinical problems in a variety of fields. The translational nature of my work means I am focused on finding solutions to real-world problems with the potential for commercialisation and immediate clinical implementation.
