About Tommy Hu

I love making games and have been an indie game developer for 5 years. I am known as ImaginaryGrass online, check out my portfolio at https://tommyhu.net/. I created many top games in GMTK and Brackeys game jams. For instance, I and an artist created a GMTK game rated top 2.5% globally. Furthermore, the game was featured by YouTubers and Streamers. I also created a game for Brackeys Jam (rated top 1.4%). Just like most game developers, I have been working hard towards making my own game “Grass Wielder” come true – over the past 3 years! I allocated thousands of my free hours to developing games, and am very capable of making them.I have mastered C++ for 3+ years and have a deep understanding of it. Not only have I been using C++ to create small projects (like a GUI Sudoku program built using SFML and OpenGL) and solve problems, but I also used it to achieve honour roll in the most prestigious programming contest, the Canadian Computing Competition (CCC).I also built my own 2D game engine using C#, HLSL, and the MonoGame Framework, so I know many of the intricate details of graphical, structural, and optimization techniques. My engine is so robust that I have been building my dream game “Grass Wielder” using it. C# is a bit different from C++ but I can make a game in C++ with frameworks like SFML for sure. In terms of organization, I have been using Trello for my dream game “Grass Wielder”, so I can prioritize important tasks. In addition to C#/C++, I use Python to automate tedious tasks, HTML, CSS, PHP, React, and JavaScript to make websites, Java to solve programming challenges and university projects, R for data science, and many more.During the Brackeys 2023.2 game jam, I led a team of 5 and created a #13-ranked game (#3 innovation). We used Trello for organization and Discord for communication. On the first day of the jam, we had many conflicting game ideas, but we carefully selected the best parts of everyone’s ideas and mixed them to create a cohesive and well-designed game. I used Trello to order tasks based on priority (for instance, making extra particles is much less important than importing music and SFX), and we finished the game on time. In the end, everyone is happy with the final product and the ranking of the game.Additionally, I am also a music producer, pixel artist, and photographer. I created all the assets in “Grass Wielder” and some for the jam games. You can view/listen to some of my work in my portfolio! In short, I am capable of building complex game systems, and I am more than capable of working with other developers.
