Store Manager
For the last three months I have been working in various locations across the area to get a 'real feel' of how the business operates in their core format. My time has been spent learning the working processes, applying my own skills to the tasks in store, and overall leadership of the teams. This time has allowed me to gain the experience necessary to feel I can have a positive impact in a high street store.
Store Manager
Midway through closure of our Letchworth location, I was given responsibility of a second store, which was going through a transition phase in the takeover. Both challenging and exciting, this was a great step for me, to have some dual site experience. Once closure was finalized in the Letchworth store, I took responsibility for the new store in Hitchin. This is a large format store, with its own car park. Branded under the name 'Poundland Clearance'. We sold the full poundland range, and old stock from 99p stores and Family Bargains made up the clearance side of the shop.
Store Manager
As store manager I had full responsibility for the store performance. I was brought in to fix a broken store that had not had a manager for 6 months. Since being placed in store, I have organised the team to deliver a streamlined retail operation. Increasing footfall through commercial merchandising, and promoting the products our customers want. This has given us year on year growth across the store. I have applied my knowledge of the retail industry and people management skill. Also my ability to think commercially has been invaluable during my time in this position. After 99p stores were bought out by Poundland, the decision was made to permanently close my store in Letchworth. Together with the assistance of a representatives from Hilco Capital, I managed the closure with ease, organising stock movements and staff relocation within the business, and everything else inbetween.
Team Manager Fresh And Frozen
Midway through 2015, all stores went through a consultation period to restructure the management teams. Fortunately, I was able to secure a role through this process. In essence, this role extended my remit to include another department. This position offered all new challenges. Having not worked on the fresh food team for a number of years, I had to familiarise myself with the department procedures again. Once that was done, I was able to lead and develop my team to have a positive impact on sales, wastage, and labour cost.
Grocery Supervisor
I decided I take a step back from my more senior role, after becoming a father for the first time. I received amazing support from my superiors and colleagues alike during this time.Whilst this was a step down, I was able to maintain the influence and high standards I had developed on nights, and improve on the processes I had put in place.Taking on this role allowed me to refocus some of my efforts into the customer service aspects of retail. The day to day interaction with our customers was, in itself, motivational. Understanding thier needs, learning where myself and our teams could develop a better experience for them.
Manager Nights
In an effort to replicate my high standards across numerous departments, I was invited to be the Duty night manager, overseeing the night replenishment operation. This would also serve as a period of training, to gain wider knowledge of the inner workings of the store operation, building relationships across the store, and the development of colleagues in leadership positions. I was responsible for a team of up to 30 colleagues storewide. I had responsibility for the health and safety of staff on site, the site itself, and internal security of stock/property. Also as a night duty manager I had responsibility for accepting night deliveries and managing performance of the night staff.Given the high profile of the store, my performance was consistently in the spotlight of key people throughout the business. I would deliver the store to the Store Manager every day, and would not hand over until I had set the standard. I implemented efficient ways of working across the store, and encouraged cooperation and support between departments to meet changing workloads, and boost productivity.
Frozen Food Supervisor
After achieving high standards I'm my previous role, an oppertunity was offered to me, by recommendation of our area manager, to become a supervisor in our areas flagship store. This was a challenge that I accepted, and surpassed the expectations of my management team and myself. I found a key interest in the development of staff and how it directly influences my own, and the stores overall performance. This particular store was an extremely high profile location, home to our regional Director at the time, and was often visited by senior management within the company, including regional teams and board members. Store standards were meticulously scrutinized, meaning only the best performing teams were selected to run departments in the store, of which I was proud to be a part of.I consistently maintained high standards on the department, both on shop floor and back of house. My back stock was kept to a minimum by anticipating sales trends, tracking daily sales and maximizing sales potential. Simultaneously, I would maintain maximum availability on the shop floor. Presented to the highest of standards, I would take pride in the merchandising of my sections, and the overall impression this gave to our customers.
Grocery And Frozen Assistant
In this position I had many demanding tasks and duties.I was responsible for two major departments in the store, Frozen Foods, and beers and ciders. Each of these departments required stock to be ordered via order pads, and through a ‘single case’ system on a hand held terminal. When the stock was delivered, I would work through it myself to ensure everything is merchandised correctly, check the accuracy of the order, and prepare for my next order. This could have been between 100-150 cases per day, per department.Following strict stock management processes, I would maintain my back stock levels to ensure it is kept presentable, workable and recordable. Also anticipating sales trends and future stock requirements. It was also my responsibility to re-plan the sections to keep them up to date to maintain high impact sales, and organise promotional changes in restricted time frames.Along with these departments I played large parts in other departments around the store. My warehouse work is arguably where the majority of my best work is achieved. 2-3 days a week I would run the morning warehouse shift, beneath the store manager, to ensure all deliveries are dealt with quickly and correctly. This would include anything from larger Lorries to smaller vans or couriers.I would handle all the paper work and organize other members of staff to get the incoming stock worked/checked promptly. Since starting these duties our store achieved the fastest turnaround times for lorries/deliveries in our area. While working in this position, I achieved a number of professional goals, including gaining a customer service and retail skills NVQ and a recognized forklift truck certification.
Sales Assistant
This job was very demanding. my duties include face-to-face transactions with customers, stock taking, cleaning, and general store tasks.I participated in numerous training courses, centering on customer service and stock management. There were many things that kept me motivated and challenged in this role, including organizing online customer orders, processing refunds, and dealing with general customer queries.
