About Tommy Gibson
I completed my PhD in Biostatistics at UCLA in December of 2022. I got my PhD so that I could do what always made the most sense to me: answer important questions using math and data. In my time at UCLA I gained a thorough understanding of many statistical modeling techniques, and I look forward to using those techniques to solve interesting problems. Through interdisciplinary research I became adept at distilling complicated analyses and concepts into something digestible for others with different academic backgrounds.
Listed skills include Critical Thinking, Data Analysis, Lifeguarding, Trombone Performance, and 10 others.

Graduate Teaching Associate
Courses:Biostatistics 202A/B - Mathematical Statistics- Held office hours and graded homework on fundamentals of probability theory- Topics included combinatorics, transformations of random variables, properties of random samples, point and interval estimation, and hypothesis testingPublic Health 200A - Foundations of Public Health- Led weekly computer labs analyzing case studies in Stata software- Distilled advanced statistical concepts for a non-quantitative audience- Held office hours in conjunction with TAs in EpidemiologyBiostatistics 200A - Methods in Biostatistics- Designed and taught weekly computer labs in R- Held office hours assisting with coursework on hypothesis testing, interval estimation and power analysis- Graded homework and provided feedback
Biostatistics Intern
The Summer Institute for Training in Biostatistics (SIBS) was essentially a crash-course in biostatistical practice. Included was advanced hypothesis testing and regression methods using datasets provided by the CDC in Atlanta, and presenting results of case studies to non-mathematical crowds.
Research Assistant
I cleaned and analyzed 6+ years of panel data on crime and staffing in national parks using statistical regression. The purpose of the research was to test the deterrence hypothesis, which is the idea that an increase in police staffing or an increase in the probability of arrest will lead to a decrease in crime.
Lifeguard
As a lifeguard at Whitman College, I was responsible for maintaining patron safety and the cleanliness of the facility.
Bass Trombonist
My main responsibility was preparing myself quickly for bi-monthly concerts involving famous classical compositions.
Data Analyst
I entered large datasets to be used in HAZUS earthquake simulation models. After the simulations, I analyzed the results to help advise the City of Seattle on a potential project involving the retrofitting of unreinforced masonry buildings in the greater Seattle area.
