We protect society by securing safe operations at nuclear facilities across our nation.As a mechanical engineering specialist inspector, I am responsible for evaluating and inspecting a wide range of safety significant mechanical systems employed at nuclear (other high hazard) facilities.These systems include: lifting and mechanical handing, fluid and heat transfer, ventilation and containment, emergency generation, pressure systems.I design and lead interventions to promote and sustain the high standards expected in the mechanical design, installation, commissioning, operation and maintenance of nuclear plant.

I am responsible for ensuring regulatory compliance and, as necessary, influencing improvements in safety standards to provide reassurance to the public and other stakeholders. My role involves everything from inspecting sites and assessing complex system designs through to investigating incidents and enforcing the law. Although technical credibility is vital, I also require excellent people skills. It’s important that I can demonstrate understanding of complex issues, suggest solutions and work as part of a team.

My role is to provide mechanical engineering advice and support to ONR inspectors, evaluating safety standards at the UK’s nuclear licenced sites, against the high standards required by law.I am working autonomously within the ‘Sellafield, Decommissioning Fuels & Waste’ division; where my principal task involves the evaluation of mechanical engineering documentation against relevant good practice. I provide specialist engineering advice to warranted inspectors with regards to the condition of mechanical plant and the adequacy of operational and maintenance regimes.

As a design engineer for the Package Design Team; my primary responsibility was to undertake mechanical design substantiations and justifications for nuclear transport packages. I provided FE-Analysis and guidance for the design of an IP-2 rated transport container for radioactive waste, and judgements on the adequacy of maintenance for nuclear transport packages.

I completed a 2-year industrial-based graduate scheme, backed by the ONR, to develop my personal and professional skills across the nuclear industry. The scheme included a series of training zones aimed at developing skills outside of mechanical engineering; i.e. business skills & project management. As a practical demonstration of this learning; I was tasked building a team, creating and managing a publicly trading company, to sell at profit a bespoke product of our own design. We successfully delivered on our objective, raising £4500 for charity, a 150% return on our initial investment.

As a member of the Waste Technology Sector, I was responsible for developing a quality assurance regime to ensure the integrity of automated-welding equipment for use in the field, to seal orphan radioactive sources within high-integrity canisters in preparation for safe disposal.

Geneva, Switzerland

I completed a 2.5-year fellowship at CERN, as a Finite Element Analysist as part of the ‘Large Hadron Collider: Hi-Lumi’ upgrade project. My principal responsibility was to undertake FE-Analyses of design proposals for the prototype 12-Tesla superconducting di-pole magnets. The role was largely autonomous, and I was responsible for analysing and presenting a design’s benefits and shortfalls to a team of multi-disciplined senior engineers, sometimes presenting in multiple languages (English and French).
