This client/server application included the development of servlets running on the IPlanet webserver. The client side involved the development of Java applets to implement a user interface, using Java/Swing package, including the implementation of custom widgets. The project involved the writing of SQL statements, the use of JDBC, Oracle 8 and Oracle 9i databases. For username/password verification, experience was gained by incorporating an LDAP database. The Startool project was internationalized for use in Asia and Europe. The program has been deployed since 1999 for use within the Sun’s SE organization. This contract was initially of one-month duration but expanded to over 4 years, it was not a full –time contract and had periods of no activity, the contract activity was equivalent to two full-time years.

The reference implementation was for use by developers of embedded software running within home cable boxes. The work was performed along a strict timeline (weekly milestones), in which all milestones were met, and the project was delivered on time. As the source was to be licensed, it was required to be well documented. The reference implementation is available on the web at (http://java.sun.com/products/javatv/). Also a Developer, within a team, responsible for a preliminary version of a home cable box, that was to be supplied to ATT. Duties included understanding and modifying Java’s memory management system and class loader, and the development of TV guide functionality, as well as, games for use by a typical TV remote control. This embedded software was simulated on a Windows NT system, but targeted to a DCT-2000 (Motorola 68000).

Developer of an applet capable of processing custom tags and standard HTML tags, the custom tags implementing 2D features, animation and the tax logic. The system was unique in that tax logic was performed within the applet, as opposed to server side. Duties required interaction with several groups: including graphics artists, tax accountants and management.
