I was elected to the position as an independent candidate. 2020 was an exceptionally challenging year to be in the role, but through perseverance and sheer force of will the Student Association was able to continue serving it's members through some of the darkest times in the Higher Education Sector. I personally led several campaigns fighting for student rights and wellbeing that garnered both local and national media attention. Day to day the role involved flexibility in both approaches to external challenges and where I would work that particular day. Punctuality, a strong attention to detail and the ability to make decisions under both time and financial pressure were required. During the course of this role I continued to develop skills in negotiation, working with media, writing submissions to government, appealing to MP's on behalf of students, as well as volunteer organising, and campaign strategy and coordination. Under my leadership the Association's number of financial members grew, even in the face of the pandemic. My proudest achievements in this role include the successful campaigns for fair grades in the lockdown, pushing back the date of student's financial liability by two weeks as the new realities of pandemic became clear, successfully campaigning for JCU to refund all parking permits for the year, and the relaunch of the Student Association news publication, The Bullsheet. My leadership reshaped the Student Association from a simple student service provider into a strong union committed to standing up to injustice and championing student rights and wellbeing. I am a representative of the student body charged with overseeing all sport and recreation activities affiliated with both the University and affiliated clubs both on and off campus. In my position I work with JCU staff to strategize methods to boost enjoyment and involvement in student sports.
