I am a molecular microbiology researcher with ample living and working experience in Europe and Africa. I received my PhD in Molecular Biology from the University of Amsterdam and since then have done research on tropical and exotic diseases.like meningococcal epidemics in Africa, malaria, sleeping sickness , Lyme disease, Brucellosis.From April 2015 till July 2023 I have been Editor-in-Chief at DOAJ. From late 2016 I have been responsible for the DOAJ global Ambassador program which allowed me to visit many countries of the world I was also end-responsible for managing of the Editorial Team of DOAJ.My main research interests are: development of new assessment methods for scholarly publications, soil microbiota and the human microbiome in relation to health, advocacy for open access and open science. I am strongly against the use of the Clarivate ImpactFactor for the appraisal of scientific quality. Instead I think we should further develop article level metrics, societal impact and open peer review. I have been working with Florence Piron (Quebec, Canada) and others sinse 2018 on promoting global equity in science and publishing with emphasis on the situation in Africa and Latin America.My main scientific expertises are :tropical medical research, project management, professional (NLP) communication skills, scientific information systems, Open Science, 4 +languages writing and speaking.Some selected activities: I am a member of Force 11 and was an Instructor at several Force11 summer schools from 2018 -2022 in the USA. I was a Lead of a group on Scholarly communication and inequity at the Triangle event in North Carolina (oct 2018), presenter at Predatory Journals Investigation Summit Ottawa, CN (2019) , Speaker at the Ukranian open science conference 2023, Keynote speaker at the Libsense Open Science symposium in September 2023 in Nigeria. I am also Member of the board for the Open Access Journals Toolkit (2023- current)From Januari 2024 I am no longer working for DOAJ but as an independent consultant for Open Science related projects outside of he Global North, mainly in Africa.Privately I am interested in sustainable building, ecology, health products. With my partner I am working with a company called Ringana (ringana.com) on the promotion of fresh cosmetics, sports products and supplements.
