This was a three-year commitment to take over all aspects of the HR function, including extensive recruiting, while the HR Manager was on medical leave. My consulting company Challenge the Future was put on hold during this period. It was my pleasure to be associated with such a dynamic and principled organization where I was surrounded by outstanding talent. This gave me an in-depth understanding of the challenges facing a custom injection molding company in very competitive industries (auto, medical, consumer).

Green-field start-up of a monofilament extrusion company that manufactured synthetic filaments to replace metal wire in forming, dryer and press fabrics for paper mills. The first facility was started in Montreal, Que. A second and larger plant was started in Burlington, Vermont to supply the US market. The success of Johnson Filaments was based on innovation and the development of unique products to meet the demanding needs of high pressure, steam and abrasion in a Paper Mill.

This company made braided twine and rope from the turn of the century. They had the foresight to get into plastics at the beginning (1960's) to make monofilament fishing line. They were successful and sold under their own brand, "Newton Line". At the time, people were inventing all types of applications for plastic to replace metal. We began to conduct trials with many of the leading manufacturers of screens and wires for paper mills. The progress was slow, but the knowledge acquired was massive. It makes me feel like an antique being on the leading edge of this development. Remember Mrs. Robinson?
