Each of the Caribbean islands of Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao, Saba, Sint-Eustatius and Sint-Maarten has an active Red Cross branch. These six branches are part of the Netherlands Red Cross (NLRC) National Society and focus on direct emergency aid after disasters and the provision of assistance to vulnerable groups on the islands.In this current position I am expecting to liaise between the Caribbean branches and the different support services based in the Netherlands Red Cross headquarter to ensure adequate support is given to the specific organisational needs of the Caribbean branches within the framework of the Netherlands Red Cross national society.

In order to create awareness for the situation of refugees in Europe, and especially in Calais, the foundation Doneer Je Deken was founded. Within the first month we managed to organize a fundraising campaign with more than 20 collecting points in different cities, a storage of 700m2 and an organization with 80 volunteers. With media attention in almost every media channel (3FM, De Grens Bereikt, Trouw, NRC, Jinek, Algemeen Dagblad etc. ) the campaign canbe called a big success. Since the beginning of 2015 I give lectures at sports clubs, such as running or cycling clubs, in order to help their members understand the use of good nutrition in order to improve prestations during their sports.

In the summer of 2010 the FIFA World Cup has been held in South Africa. Cape Town was one of the most important hosting cities during this tournament. To make Cape Town a suitable venue for the World Cup several new facilities were built in the city. This includes hotels, roads, airport expansion and a new football stadium. For the City of Cape Town it is important that the infrastructures investments made for this event will be used after the FIFA World Cup. The new constructed facilities will have to contribute to a better infrastructure, employment and economic growth. This study focused on which role Cape Town Tourism can play in creating higher occupancies in Cape Town hotels. The objective of this study is to gain insight in which marketing tools and activities related to FIFA 2010 have been used by Cape Town’s 3 - 4 and 5 star hotels and which ones were successful in order to give recommendations which role Cape Town Tourism Department can play in the process of creating a higher occupancy for the Cape Town hotel industry during events.
