About Tom Rayner

I am the research translation and extension specialist for scientists who want to bring their work to the world. My focus is strategic stakeholder engagement, integrating biophysical, social and economic research.HOW I PROVIDE VALUE✅ Elevate impact for researchers and their projects✅ Fast-track careers with authentic mentoring✅ Build communications confidence and capacity ✅ Create compelling content & messagingWHAT I DO📢 I use my expertise to help scientists communicate their work, so that more is made of what is known. I give them confidence and capacity, so that everyone can understand and benefit.📷 I use my photography as a tool to bear witness to, and hopefully inform, humanity’s real relationship with the natural world – the beauty and the pain – especially with respect to clean, clear, wild rivers.💪 I generate, celebrate and leverage opportunities. I strive to be adventurous, courageous, strategic and authentic, and to maybe, one day, win Wildlife Photographer of the Year.CAREER HIGHLIGHTS ⭐ Improving the health of Australia's rivers by leading ecological research. I have produced 25+ papers with 1600+ citations (h-index = 15), 2 book chapters and several first-class Honours and PhD graduates.⭐ Shooting for National Geographic as an Expedition Photographer in the Amazon. I have also studied Photojournalism at The Australian Centre for Photography, produced 3 solo photo exhibitions and crowd funded a photo book.⭐ Helping a dozen research labs become great at science communication. I distilled this consulting experience into a simple, effective framework for research communication and engagement.WHAT’S NEXT?Right now, I’m leading multi-disciplinary stakeholder research and engagement efforts. This includes work on social dynamics and behavioural economics. My goal is to support the implementation of conservation actions to deliver better outcomes for fish, fishing, farms, and communities.LET’S CONNECT!I get a kick out of creating good opportunities for others and would love to do it more.
