Tom previously worked as a teacher, department chair, and technology coordinator at Everett/Park Middle Schools. Active in district science and technology committees, Tom was also involved in grant writing, grant management, data-driven decisionmaking and strategic school improvement activities at Park Middle School. Park Middle School was a 560-student.

Tom worked as a middle school and high school science teacher at Platteview Jr. Sr. High School of South Sarpy District 46. In 1985, he was selected as the outstanding young teacher. While at SSD 46, he taught physical science, earth science and chemistry. Tom wrote two natural resource grants that enabled biology and earth science students to plant over.
