About Tom Sheridan

As a Junior at the University of Michigan majoring in Aerospace Engineering, I am deeply immersed in and passionate about airplanes and the aircraft design process. My interests include conceptual design, electric propulsion, aerospace structures, additive manufacturing, and composite materials.Currently, I lead the aerodynamics and propulsion subteams for M-Fly's Advanced Class team, ensuring both our aircraft efficiently produce lift and thrust during maneuvers. I'm also a leader in other team areas, including designing and analyzing our composite structures using FEA and piloting the PADA, our autonomous secondary aircraft.Outside of school, I interned for two years at Industrial Air Technology Corp., where I focused on designing and optimizing centrifugal fans. This role deepened my expertise in mechanical design, CAD, FEA, and turbomachinery, providing practical, hands-on experience in industry. Background photo: preparing the MX-9 and PADA for takeoff on the runway at the 2024 SAE Aero East Competition.

Tom Sheridan Work Experience Details
  • M-Fly Aero Design
    Aerodynamics And Propulsion Lead Engineer
    M-Fly Aero Design May 2024 - Present
    Ann Arbor, Us
Conceptual design and aerodynamic analysis of the next iteration of M-Fly advanced class aircraft, the MX-10.
  • M-Fly Aero Design
    Propulsion Lead Engineer
    M-Fly Aero Design Apr 2023 - May 2024
    Ann Arbor, Us
Led a 5 person team in efforts to optimize electric propulsion system for multiple aircraft. Developed a thrust stand to measure data from propulsion systems, precisely measuring up to 30 pounds of thrust. Tested propulsion systems in a wind tunnel, achieving a thrust-to-weight ratio of 0.33 and excess thrust at cruise. Conducted FEA on composite fuselage, spars, and wingbox using NX Nastran to ensure structural integrity and reduce fuselage weight by 20%. Flew the secondary aircraft, the PADA, at flight test, assisting in tuning of autonomous systems in preparation for competition. Competed and placed 2nd in design and 3rd in mission performance.
  • M-Fly Aero Design
    Manufacturing Engineer
    M-Fly Aero Design Jan 2023 - Apr 2023
    Ann Arbor, Us
Manufactured large remote-controlled aircraft in preparation for competition. Experience includes laser-cutting, carbon fiber composite layups, and assembly.
  • Industrial Air Technology Corp.
    Engineering Intern
Industrial Air Technology Corp. May 2024 - Aug 2024
    Gaylord, Mi, Us
Worked on centrifugal fans using FEA and various analysis tools. Learned about and documented manufacturing processes to ensure continuous improvement. Redesigned fan structural bracing for ease of manufacturing, and reduced first order and blade pass vibration response in fan housings. Learned and applied heat transfer to increase the accuracy and simplicity of internal tools for high-temp fans.
  • Industrial Air Technology Corp.
    Engineering Intern
Industrial Air Technology Corp. May 2023 - Aug 2023
    Gaylord, Mi, Us
Conducted failure mode analysis on industrial centrifugal fans. Used FEA to assess centrifugal loads and optimize materials and thicknesses for cost and ease of manufacture. Used modal analysis to prevent 1st order and blade pass mode excitations. Developed a variable driven fan model using SOLIDWORKS that interfaces with internal tools using VBA, allowing for fast quote time. Researched a novel oil lubrication method for high-speed bearings that is in use on current products.
