The company wanted to start mobile contents business and I developed Beauty esthetic mobile marketing site, a GPS location based restaurant flash marketing coupon site. The business was span off into as a mobile contents subsidiary Tribity Corp.

I created Tokyo IPO, Japanese IPO web portal in Nov 1999 as a content of Bargain America then span it off. I sold the business Oct 2002 to a leading Japanese IR financial services company. It is still the only IPO portal in Japan, going strong, pretty much the same business model I started with. Tokyo IPO served important information provider during the Japanese IPO boom during early 2000s.

In late 1994, I met Randy Reisinger, ex Apple IIe Product Manager, who was doing business development consulting like me. Internet was just happening and Randy and I went to see Bob Gunderson, who was just setting up his own law firm, and asked him to put together Bargain America Corp. This Silicon Valley start up grew into early leader in E Commerce, selling US products direct to Japanese consumers. We built our own E Commerce system, shipping and inventory system, email magazine based marketing system and shipped out of our warehouse in San Jose. We close to $9 million from major Japanese and US VCs such as Nippon VC, Emcompass Group, Impress, USEN and others. We signed with Lehman Bro. to go public, but alas, Internet bubble burst and due to subsequent problems which arouse from 911 troubles, we eventually closed the business down. As a founding CEO, I run the business for close to 7 years. All of my founding VP stayed with me until the day we closed the door.

I spent considerable amount of time, going to US IT industry executive conferences and major exhibitions like Comdex. I became Technologic Partners Japanese representative and contributor to Dick Shafers “Computer Letter”. My consulting clients were Kleinwort Benson (British Merchant Bank), Dentsu (Largest Japanese Ad Agency), Lexmark (US Laser printer maker) and ASCII Corp (Japanese IT publishing house).

When Microsoft set up their subsidiary in Japan, I was transferred to Tokyo and became the original Windows Product manager. Microsoft Japan was a small company, then and my responsibility was wide from bug testing, shipping OEM Adaption kit to developers support and marketing. I worked on Windows 1.03, 2.03, 2.10 and 3.00 during that time, we signed up over 20 Japanese PC companies to license Windows. It was early days of developers relations and I put together Windows Consortium with 3 of the largest PC software wholesalers, which included Softbank. At Microsoft, I learned how to build a de facto standard. I later published my experience in “Microsoft War Story: How to make a de facto standard” published from Shincho-sha.

I had written “Complete MSX Programmers Guide” and received a call from Microsoft to join as their European product manager for MSX 8 bit computer standard. I was responsible for the Philips MSX account and worked closely with European subsidiaries of Japanese CE firms such as Sony and Toshiba. I put together MSX working groups and consortiums in UK, France, the Netherland and Germany, where I learned how to create developers ecosystem.
