Entering my tenth year doing my dream job. Passionate about teaching language and literature. Long-suffering Evertonian and part-time hacker of a golf ball. PGCE graded as ‘outstanding’ by Edge Hill University in 2011, gained QTS at the end of 2012, and moved to Seville, Spain to teach at the Colegio Internacional Sevilla San Francisco de Paula in 2014. In my current role, I have been given the responsibility over the IB Diploma Programme for our English A: Language & Literture (HL/SL) and English B (HL/SL) groups. I have developed our curriculum over the past six years so that it is rich in content and is refreshed on a twice-yearly basis. Topics that I teach are current, are important and are well taught and received by our students. I am a quick learner, I set extremely high expectations for my students and I love to create a safe, positive work environment for the young people I teach. With an additional three years of experience teaching GCSE and A-Level in England, I am now a highly skilled teacher of IB DP in both English A and English B. I push my students to express themselves during the two years we have together, and I delight in engaging my classes with the bigger issues of today by looking at the texts and ideas of yesterday. Alongside IB DP, I teach the PAU (Prueba de Acceso a la Universidad) as part of the parallel Spanish Baccalaureate programme. My students have achieved the best results in the school’s history and the best average grades in Seville can be found amongst ex-students of mine. Working with 16–18-year-olds fills me with excitement each day. When I arrived at the school, I set up our Debate Club who are now yearly participants at the European Youth Parliament España, CICAE Liga de Debate and Model United Nations events in Spain. This culture for expression and respect is how I co-ordinate with colleagues to instil confidence and enthusiasm in the students under our guidance. I feel it is my duty to deliver lessons of the highest quality and in as varied a way as possible. New technologies are an important part of education in 2021 and beyond and what better place to run with these than in an English A or English B classroom? I have contributed to the InThinking’s subscription site and provided lesson plans, student exemplar work and take part in standardization tasks. I care about my school as a community and as a place where students should both give and get respect. I look for new opportunities with exchange visits, conversation workshops and partnerships with schools in the UK and in Europe.
