About Tom Slater

Detasseling corn was the most difficult job I ever had - more-so than any farmwork, refereeing basketball, afterschool programming, or writing projects. After college, (1967) I went to work for the Omaha Recreation Department, leading a new Center in South Omaha, then to York, Nebraska, to lead a new Center and Museum, then to Council Bluffs to be Recreation Director and then the Director of Parks, Recreation, and Public Property in Council Bluffs, Iowa. In 1974, I started a small business there focusing on public relations and marketing. I was then elected to the Iowa State Senate in 1976 from District 50 and served for eight years (leaving on my own accord). During that time, I sustained the business until 1980 and then free-lanced writing during non-session time. After retirement from the Senate, I started a company called State Public Policy Group (SPPG), a company that allowed me to use my cumulative experience and knowledge. The private company focused on policy, research, project management --- all with "engagement" of communities and individuals as the centerpiece. SPPG is in its 32nd year of operation continuing with its mission of social responsibility.
