However, securing funding was a challenge. South African regulations at the time required giving over 50% of my company to a previously disadvantaged group member to qualify for financial assistance. Unwilling to compromise my ownership, I sought alternative ways to obtain the necessary capital.During this search, a friend from the USA introduced me to trading. He initially suggested trading physical gold, but I quickly realized this was against the law in South Africa. He then introduced me to speculation trading online—a little-known practice at the time, especially in the realm of intraday trading.With limited resources, I turned to the public library to educate myself about investing, as there were no specific books on online speculation trading. I absorbed what I could, adapting the knowledge to fit my new venture. Before long, I developed strategies that generated enough profit to sustain my lifestyle. However, the profits, while steady, weren’t sufficient to build significant wealth.Determined to succeed, I delved deeper into money management and discovered the importance of aligning my lifestyle with my financial goals. I realized I had been living to impress others rather than living authentically. By making small but meaningful adjustments, I ensured my profits not only supported my desired lifestyle but also allowed for reinvestment into my trading accounts. Over the next 12-24 months, I witnessed the power of compounding as my accounts grew exponentially.As my trading success continued, I found myself with enough capital to revisit my original business idea. However, I decided against it, recognizing that it would require employees and the complexities of managing a traditional business. Instead, I focused on trading, which granted me the freedom to live life on my own terms.Trading has afforded me the lifestyle I once dreamed of, with the added benefit of taking equity interests in various other ventures—without the need to manage employees, endure rush-hour traffic, or be confined to an office.Looking back, I’m grateful for the pivotal moment in 1999 when I chose a different path. It shaped my belief that giving something for free can rob individuals of their self-worth and dignity.
