Phd-StudentVu Amsterdam Feb 2011 - Feb 2017Amsterdam Area, NetherlandsIn my PhD project, which is a collaboration between VU University and AFC Ajax, we try to improve the quantification of training load and assessment of physical performance during football training. The supervisors of my PhD project are dr. Jo de Ruiter, prof. dr. Geert Savelsbergh and prof. dr. Peter Beek (Research Institute MOVE).In the past decade, there has been an increased interest in the estimation of workload and energy expenditure of football activities. Accurate assessment of workload in football training and matches is important in optimizing physical preparation and assessing physical performance of football players. Especially in elite football, with high physical match demands both in frequency and intensity, coaches and practitioners seek to optimally load their players in order to improve or at least maintain player’s physical fitness without getting injured. In the first part of the project we assessed the accuracy of a state-of-the-art electronic tracking system (Inmotio LPM) and aim to validate an equation for estimating the energy costs of accelerated and decelerated running. In the second part we assessed the training load (relative to match load) of a Dutch professional football team and evaluated the use of small-sided games locomotor performance to assess physical fitness of football players.Next to my research activities, as part of the collaboration, I worked as a sport scientist/exercise physiologist for AFC Ajax. My main tasks were daily training and match (physical) performance analysis of the first team and supervision of training and match analysis projects for the second team and youth academy. -
