I secured an 18 month secondment as a Research Paramedic to co-ordinate the KARMA2 trial: a feasibility study looking at 30-day re-admission and mortality of patients who have undergone pre-hospital point-of-care ketone testing by front line ambulance clinicians.This role involved planning the delivery of the study, data collection, maintaining databases, design and delivery of a training package for operational clinicians, act as liaison and point of contact with operational clinicians and hospital colleagues and undertaking qualitative research. I also collaborated with other members of the research team on studies including PARAMEDIC-3, STRETCHED, TRIM, & CESSATION.The main KARMA2 conclusions were:- Ambulance capillary blood ketone meter use for ‘High-Risk’ DKA patient recognition and commencement of fluid therapy was deemed acceptable.- Ambulance ketone measurement offered opportunities to expedite in-hospital emergency DKA care.- Ambulance clinicians associated meter use with improved clinical decision-making, patient support, and safety-netting.- There is scope for improved ambulance diabetes education – ‘sick day rules’ and euglycaemic DKA were unfamiliar for most study participants.- COVID-19 impacted study recruitment so that progression criteria were not met. Learning could include use of alternative trial design and clinician training mode for future research.This piece of work won the Diabetes UK Nursing and Allied Healthcare Professional Diabetes Research Award presented at the Diabetes UK Professional Conference!

I have gained additional competency in wound closure and am also continuing my activity as a Specialist Operations Response Team Operative. I am now looking towards developing my leadership skill sets and credentials as well as starting my post-graduate development in paramedicine.Am also continuing my Research Paramedic Secondment but taking every opportunity to stay clinically active.

My role is to facilitate the day-to-day operation of the restaurant employing effective shift management, and motivational team practises (especially during periods of flagging morale). I am also involved in inventory and cash management, staff training and mentoring as well as facilitating and maintaining high standards of food and overall restaurant safety. As an experienced middle manager, I’m expected to apply my training and common sense to troubleshooting all and any kinds of problems adversely impacting the restaurant and ensuring the delivery of the highest quality customer service. During this time I have gained experience in effective team management and techniques to encourage the best performance from my staff. I have also augmented my professional experience in areas such as Health and Safety, Food Safety Knowledge, Working Time Regulations and Customer Service Practices. I also held a restaurant record for most customers served in an hour which stood for 4 years. I took a gap year to work for and obtain this promotion so as to build savings for my time at university as I felt my student loan would not be enough to live on and did not want to be a further financial burden to my parents.

I adopted a multi-disciplinary position in the restaurant working with all grades of staff and our customers, but also providing mentoring of junior staff. But this promotion opened up the opportunity to training other staff on best practises in the day-to-day operation of the restaurant. The people I was training and mentoring were generally new team members and much of my role involved the tracking and validation of their training against the quality management systems operating in the firm. I was also instrumental in preparing training strategies, developing tailored, effective and constructive feedback for trainees and providing a supportive arena to augment the initial experience of work for these younger, less experienced people. Four of my stage 1-3 trainees are now themselves working at management level with another currently waiting for their interview. This role was undertaken in the evenings and weekends while undertaking my A-Level studies

University Of Hull

Responsibilities Include advising students on issues regarding student life. These fall into 3 main categories: Academic, Financial and Housing. Here I facilitate troubleshooting in any of these area's which can involve anything from signposting to information, mediation between 2 parties and even direct involvement on the behalf of a student. I have learnt mentoring and advising skills as well as knowledge and practise of confidentiality in the context of welfare maintenance. Here, I have also gained experience of effective case sheet writing and record keeping from this roles requirement of having to keep detailed notes for each appointment for future reference as cases often are more complex, requiring multiple appointments which may not be with the original advisor.
