Chair Of Trustees
CurrentFriends of the Upper Wye FOUW.org.uk was set up by grassroots activists concerned by the rapid deterioration of the River Wye and its ecosystem. FOUW has set up and manage a 120+ strong network of volunteer 'citizen scientist' river water quality testers. We also campaign for reducing agricultural pollution of waterways in the catchment and are working towards achieving Designated Bathing Water status at popular swimming spots along the River. We are always happy to share our experience and knowledge with other groups wanting to effect similar change in their areas.
Founder, Cidermaker
CurrentArtistraw Cider is an award-winning cidery and orchard situtated in the foothills of the Black Mountains, close to Hay-on-Wye. We specialise in making cider like it was made before the 1970s, when industrial brewing techniques and accountants got between the apples and the thirsty customer. By which we mean, we make cider using apples as the sole ingredient. We don't add water, sugar, sulphites, flavouring compounds, colouring compounds or any other "permitted adjuncts" - we just focus on producing the highest quality natural cider from traditional, biodiversity-rich, standard orchards. We do this as a route to showcasing genuinely low-carbon, nature friendly production routes of fine food and drink, as well as providing a sufficient supply of cider for me to consume. You can come and visit our cidery (March to September is best!) and have a tour and tasting if you would like to - head to our website for more details artistraw.co.uk
Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter (Staff Scientist)
III-V multijunction solar cell development. GaInAsP and related semiconductor epitaxial growth, characterisation, and solar cell development/characterisation. Responsible for the epitaxial growth of complex multijunction cells on GaAs and InP and InP-based engineered substrates that broke the world record twice for the most efficient solar cell, 44.7% and 46.0% as tested independently in Japan.
Staff Research Scientist
Responsible for the continued development of JDSU CPV cell technology after the acquisition of QuantaSol MQW technology. Advised engineering management and production teams on product development strategies, and planned and executed long-term product roadmap. Achieved a 42.5% hero conversion efficiency before JDSU closed division in adverse market conditions.
Director Of Product Marketing And Development
At QuantaSol, a start-up spun out from Imperial College, we developed and manufactured 3J multiple quantum well solar cells with >40% efficiency, for application in terrestrial desert power stations.Responsible for the overall product development and technology architecture evolution for ultra high-efficiency solar cells, in a start-up of 15 employees. Managed a team of seven PhD development engineers before handing over to manufacturing in Taiwan. Managed patent portfolio with several inventors and patents at varying stages through the grant process in global jurisdictions. Invited speaker and presented progress at international conferences, IEEE, EU-PVSEC, CPV-series. Key technical due diligence in contract negotiation for strategic trade sale to JDSU.Skills in technology management, brand and product roadmap development, technology strategy and product marketing, intellectual property management, sales force training sales tools development, technology evangelising and solar cell market and design.
Product Engineering Director
Initially responsible for solar cell research and development, meeting investor milestones, later I grew and managed the technical team from 1 to 7 highly qualified individuals (PhD). We achieved a world record efficiency for 1J GaAs MQW solar cell of 28.3% and developed the blueprints for a world-class triple junction solar cell exceeding 40% in production efficiency.Intimately involved in several rounds of investment, technical 'guru' for VCs and reporting on technical progress to Board of Directors.
Managing Director
While working on my PhD I made my first foray into the world of entrepreneurship. The aim was to create a commercially successful source of biodiesel from used cooking oil. While the start-up was successful in finding a process to do this, we put together a strong team of 4, developing the product failed when seeking third party funding to execute a pilot.
Project Manager / Engineer
Responsible for the installation project management and installation (construction) support for innovative vertical axis wind turbines. Some design work, partcularly for electrical and anti-vibration solutions. Developed skills in specifying and using hinged monopole masts in wind turbine applications.
