Since early 2018, I’ve been building a brand new community platform — Diagnostic Network (DN) — aimed at technical communities like the vehicle service industry. Starting from scratch, I architected the software design and worked with one other developer to build and launch DN into production at AWS in just four months, with hundreds of paying customers. Since then, I’ve become the sole technologist and manager, developing and shipping novel, major new features, including: tokens and bounties (incentivizing users to provide peer-to-peer help), custom discussion metadata, custom message types, and user groups. Prior to my current employer, I spent 23 years helping create, build and maintain iATN, the International Automotive Technicians Network, from 1995 to 2018. I became active in web development just as iATN founder Brent Black was creating the “AutoTechNet” email list that would eventually become the backbone of the company. Brent hired me as employee #2 in 1995. I helped re-brand the fledgling company as “iATN,” down to creating the distinctive logo (RIP 2020). I operated as iATN’s sole technologist until 2004, and continued to lead the small development team, operating as both the architect and as a full stack developer, as well as routine DBA, sysadmin and office IT functions, and advising on managerial and other non-technical issues within the company.In my free time, I enjoy being with my family, and working on my own personal software and service ideas at Winzig, the company I co-founded with my wife in 2011.
