Profile bio

About Tonka Malekovic

I am a planner of spatial transformations to sustainability and a visual artist with over 15 years of experience working site- and city-specifically, often in participatory formats in public spaces. In my artistic practice, I approach spaces sensitively and playfully, engaging in dialogue with specific contexts and places, local memory, groups, and individuals. As a spatial transformation planner, I deploy the same sensitivity and context awareness when approaching planning challenges at different scales (from neighborhood to megaregional). In doing so, I am particularly interested in urbanization patterns in the European territory, specifically the challenges brought by competition among different sectors and planning for a sustainable future. Since urban form has always been influenced by our means of mobility and habits, I pay special attention to mobility transition, as well as tools and approaches capable of transforming our living environments into more sustainable and livable ones, such as green infrastructure, nature-based solutions, and various socio-ecological-technical solutions. Another focus is on citizens' participation. Engaging communities through co-creation processes is essential for harnessing local knowledge and capacities, securing public consensus on innovative solutions, and accelerating the transition to sustainability.
