Featuring:• An expertise in electronic displays, image capture, image processing, and low power system architectures that process and communicate with high efficiency by using only the minimal set of data vital to the human vision system.• A strong background in human vision, color science, graphics, display technologies, imaging, consumer electronics, digital signal processors, and wireless mobile platforms, with 44 issued patents worldwide.• Proven skills in leading cross-functional development teams and accelerating the adoption of new products and technologies.• A track record of successfully accomplishing highly ambitious project goals.• A track record of enabling immense profitability. Also featuring rare and deep domain knowledge in:• Subpixel Rendering (SPR) technologies. SPR technologies use human-vision principles to optimize the use of available subpixels to render information using fewer than 3 subpixles per pixel. SPR is not only important in rendering high-quality text and image details, but it is also a vital component in combatting the exponential growth of cost and energy as modern 2D displays continue to increase in pixel density and evolve to address visual hyperacuity, wide color-gamut, stereopsis, in-cell sensors/logic, and, ultimately, light field rendering.• Gamut Mapping Algorithms (GMA) and gamut expansion algorithms. These technologies are essential for producing brilliant “new” colors that will be the next “wow-factor” in display systems.• Human-Vision Based Image Compression technologies. These will play a pivotal role in the optimization of system power and of system resources that are used to process and communicate ultra-high-resolution images.

Chief Technology OfficerNouvoyance Inc., (Formerly Clairvoyante Inc., Acquired By Samsung In 2008) 2008 - PresentDeveloped revolutionary electronic display systems, image capture systems, and image processing algorithms that are having momentous impact on Samsung’s mobile phone, tablet, and TV product lines.Primary Functions:• Invented new human-vision based technologies to reduce power, lower cost, and improve image quality in electronic display systems and image capture systems.• Wrote software to model and simulate new algorithms.• Led hardware engineers to implement new algorithms into hardware.• Created all project proposals, and wrote and presented detailed technical reports on algorithms, software and hardware implementations, and simulation results.• Led efforts to revise and tune new technologies for Samsung’s display and system production.
-
CtoNouvoyance (Continued) 2008 - PresentKey Accomplishments:• Co-invented and developed high resolution PenTile™ display technology that has enabled Samsung to ship hundreds of millions of Galaxy and Note products. • Designed special OLED low-power mode sub-pixel rendering algorithms used commercially in all of Samsung OLED displays.• Designed PenTile RGBW Dynamic Backlight Control, RGBW Gamut Mapping, RGBW Post-scaling, and Display System Brightness Control algorithms, which enabled a new class of display that is unrivaled in power savings without image quality loss or simultaneous contrast errors. These are now shipping in high volumes in WQXGA Tablets, 4K laptops, and 4K TVs.• Designed a new class of human-vision based image compression algorithms surpassing all previous efforts by Samsung and their partners. These are currently being integrated into the next generation Applications Processors and Display Driver ICs and may have ubiquitous impact across all Samsung product-lines.• Designed a reconfigurable display engine to optimally support state-of-the-art image processing and power saving functionality and all variants of OLED and LCD displays. • Designed high performance algorithms for RGBW TV products. • Successfully completed a highly ambitious project to create a multi-primary display with 135% color-gamut and 25% power consumption using a hybrid field-sequential and color filter approach that was free from color breakup artifacts. • Designed novel RGBW camera sensor configurations for improved SNR and ultra-low-light performance. • Designed a slim camera path to efficiently demosaic and process RAW camera data for direct communication to the display engine, bypassing the ISP. • Designed image capture noise models, probability models, and high-speed multi-shot registration algorithms to enable the image capture of resolutions higher than the sensor array. • Designed a low-cost temporal algorithm that re-distributes spatial pixel energies to render dead-pixels invisible.

Director, Systems Applications Engineering And Business DevelopmentClairvoyante, Inc. 2002 - 2008When Clairvoyante was in startup mode, developed PenTile technology and accelerated adoption by establishing key supply chain partnerships with flat panel display manufacturers, IC suppliers, and mobile phone OEMs.• Developed key Gamut Mapping Algorithms (GMA) and Dynamic Backlight Control (DBLC) algorithms referred to as PenTile RGBW DBLC technology that positioned Clairvoyante for growth in the RGBW display space. • Led joint development and evaluation projects with IC suppliers, display suppliers, and top-tier mobile phone OEMs such as Nokia and Motorola. The OEMs established critical “pull-through” demand to drive the royalty licensing model.• Developed all technology demonstrations and collateral materials used to position PenTile technology products.
