    During this time there were both Hungry Jacks and Burger King restaurants in Australia and I was headhunted to run the patty manufacturing operation to supply Burger King restaurants. The business was newly established but lacked experience in patty manufacturing so my job was to bring the business up to speed.A selection of achievements by myself and with my team;• Completed the commissioning of the plant to Industry best practice standard.• Improved profitability by introducing LEAN industry best practises to the manufacturing, Quality and accounting systems whilst Project Managing the commercialisation of the business.• Within 3 months of commencing the role I negotiated a Liquid Nitrogen supply contract that covered my ongoing yearly salary.• Doubled the manufacturing efficiency of the business in five months whilst simultaneously decreasing manufacturing labour by 10% through increased automation. • Implemented meat supply contracts with Beef, Lamb and Pork abattoirs and oversaw the purchasing of these raw materials to maximise quality and achieve least cost inputs.• Prepared Monthly Board reports, one year Business and five year Strategic Plans for the Board of Directors and developed appropriate KPI’s.• Established fully documented and monitored Quality Systems.• Grew sales by 20% in 18 months by obtaining international sales against Australian and US competitors.

    After my time as a Technical specialist I decided to pursue a Management career and accepted to offer to manage the Foodpartners operations in Brisbane, Queensland. This was an exciting time spent with a terrific team of people dedicated to expanding the company through business wide innovation.A selection of achievements by myself and with my team;• Prepared and successfully submitted capital expenditure proposals for a $2.5 million and subsequent $5 million Capital Expenditure proposal to the US Head Office of ConAgra (the then USD30B owners of AMH) to manufacture Pizza Toppings unique in Australia.• Successfully commissioned the Production plant and equipment for the above two projects on time and on budget.• Successfully led the contract negotiation of a further 5 year, $50m supply contract with Pizza Hut, which tripled the company’s annual turnover.• Recruited and mentored department heads including raw materials purchase, manufacturing, engineering, marketing, Quality and Product Development.• Improved company performance by utilising LEAN principles and measuring them against industry best practises.• Grew the business from $5m to $25m over five years from concept to full commercialisation with a staff of 50, assuming full P & L responsibility for the business.• Reported Company performance through monthly Board reports, and produced one year Business and five year Strategic Plans for presentation to the ConAgra Board in the US.• Expanded the business internationally to Japan, Philippines, Indonesia and Singapore.• Established fully documented ISO 9002 based Quality Systems.• Successfully negotiated a $600,000 incentive package with the Queensland Government. • Negotiated an Enterprise Agreement with the Australasian Meat Industry Employees Union, despite very difficult industrial relations conditions, and represented the company in the Industrial Commission.

    This was my first exposure to the systematic approach of Global QSRs and, wow, was I impressed! Say what you will, the commitment to quality in all senses by McDonalds and FJ Walker was the most advanced in the Australian value added meat industry. It also translated across to the abattoirs supplying the business having to adopt stringent quality systems.After a while it was decided to expand the reach of the Prepared Foods Division and, since we were a totally B2B business, I volunteered to look for new business. In late 1989 I took a phone call from the Technical Manager at Pizza Hut asking if we’d like to make Gold Standard Beef Pizza Topping and, as they say, the rest is history. My team and I then selected the best global technologies that we could find and commissioned those as part of a state of the art Pizza Topping and value added meat plant at Dinmore in Queensland. That plant is still active today as part of JBS value added operations.A selection of achievements by myself and with my team;• Using innovative technologies developed Beef Pizza Topping for supply to Pizza Hut (Then PepsiCo) using equipment and processes unique to Australia. Also developed and implemented the manufacture of Microwaveable Finger Foods for I&J Foods.• Played a major role in the negotiation of the five year $20 million Beef Topping supply contract with Pizza Hut Australia.• Change managed the successful implementation of TQM in the Manufacturing and Distribution businesses over a three year period.• Successfully negotiated $500,000 of funding with the Australian Meat and Livestock Research and Development Corporation for Development and marketing of new products.• Wrote and maintained internal and Export programs for the business, and obtained and maintained NATA registration for the QA laboratory• Presented to the AIFST conference in New Zealand on Innovation and Product Development.
