As Print Consultant for Hartgraph, based in Amersham, Bucks, I draw on 40 years’ experience in the print trade. I’ve worked in print production and sales and always been fascinated by unusual cardboard engineering products that lend that extra something to a company’s image. I was in at the start of the large “standees” cardboard cut-outs of film stars at cinemas and the introduction of cardboard in frozen food packaging; – I had to check the card didn’t go soggy. I pride myself on delivering on time. I know supplying print to Glasgow or Dublin may take one day but it’s double that to deliver beyond those hubs. Once I was asked at short notice to deliver to an Exhibition in Rome for a specific time. I knew lorries were banned from French roads on Sundays so I hired two transit vans. They were on the ferry when the customer rang to say he’d forgotten some vital supplies. I ordered a third van. As there were only two unloading slots in Rome, I arranged for all three to meet outside the venue and to split contents of the third between the other two. The logistics were horrendous - but it worked. I love solving problems, offering cost-effective yet quality solutions. I can advise on all types of print finishing and show clients the difference between alternative ‘special effects’ processes for the same product. Print a brochure in one, two or three different blacks and I can show the huge increase in quality and give customers a choice. As a former print production technical manager, I once raised the number of food labels printable on one sheet by over 20%.
