The NICA brief and scope is continually evolving, and so the Process Management and Improvement team exists to seed best practice into assurance teams, and to act as a trouble-shooting team for process issues. Guy’s & St Thomas’ Hospital Trust is one of the largest NHS foundation trusts, with an international reputation for clinical excellence and an operational budget of nearly £1Bn. In order to operationally support its business and clinical objectives GSTT runs a significant IT department. Within IT, the ‘Business Progression’ programme consists of high priority tactical projects urgently required by the Trust to maintain business and clinical effectiveness, and ensure compliance objectives are met. A key feature of business progression is the use of Project Managers with long experience in external organisations, to bring best practice to GSTT.Key responsibilities included:- Run the Ascribe Symphony ‘Refresh’ project, to upgrade and configure Accident and Emergency software.- Run a Medical Physics project to acquire and install compliance-critical asset management software.- Run an infrastructure procurement project in support of the GSTS joint venture between GSTT and Serco.- Full lifecycle project management, from business case, through product and supplier tendering and negotiation, technical architecture, deployment and change management.- Operate in a clinically-sensitive manner, mindful of the Trusts primary objective to deliver patient care, for example when requiring down-time for installation and go-live activities.- Contribute ideas, best practice, and technical knowledge from external, non-NHS experience to foster better ways of working.

The Summary Care Record (SCR) programme is to deliver advanced software to GP practices in England and Wales that allows secure, audited access to medical records by healthcare professionals. Contracted as a project manager to accelerate severely delayed software releases into GP practices, increase quality, solve technical product issues and bring industry and programme management best-practice, including PRINCE2.Responsibilities included:- Release management of 4 third-party products, achieving the NHS's first SCR 'Full Roll-Out Approval' in January 2009- Stimulate delivery; doubled the number of live sites from 27 to 50 within 6 months with no additional software or resource.- Contribute knowledge of messaging and integration to SCR requirements, reviewing and adding to SCR requirements for programme Phase 2.- Introduced a repeatable deployment model for sites, decreasing the effort required to deploy a site by 50%- Due to permanent staff shortage, assumed management role for three field-based testing resources and junior staff members. Introduced formal task objectives, planning and issue management.
