Responsibilities ranged from carrying out or overseeing supplier auditing and development of technical, ethical and quality standards through to responding to the daily needs of clients. Product supplied to a range of clients including Costco, Morrison's, Reynolds, Sainsbury's, Tesco, Waitrose and a number of food service and processing clients.

On return to the UK after 17 years in the Americas, work at Utopia UK focussed on supplier development and maintenance. New suppliers were identified and developed. Auditing was carried out to push technical development to bring the standards in place up to those demanded by UK multiple clients such as Tesco, Waitrose, Costco and food service clients. Products covered included mango, papaya, lime and minor exotics.In 2009 Utopia UK was taken into administration; the assets were purchased by Total Produce.

Guatemala

Continuing work with FreshSeal following the BASF purchase of the product group from Agway. Development and demonstration of FreshSeal modified atmosphere (MA) coating, a soluble polymer developed for application on fruit to extend storage and shelf life. Responsibilities involved developing contacts, carrying out demonstrations, mounting application equipment and collating results to demonstrate how benefits seen at the end of the supply chain permit increased returns for the grower. Responsible for introduction in Central America (Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Belize, Panama), South America (Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Brazil) working in co-ordination with each in-country team. Support work in Mexico and USA destination evaluating results at destination.In 2006 BASF took the decision to place FreshSeal introduction (and a number of other development programmes) on hold. With retrospect this decision helped protect the company from the world economic downturn which started in 2007.

Responsible for introduction in Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Belize, Panama. Clients under development included Dole, Del-Monte, Frutas Mayas, Fresh-Quest, Brooks Tropicals and independent growers in the region.

Guatemala

Work with plantations owned by shareholders and independent growers in Guatemala to insure high quality fruit for export. Agronomic aspects included continuing development of quality, tree size control, introduction of irrigation and fertigation programmes as well as the development of expected harvest programmes, feeding into the commercial team. Two seasons were worked managing the export operation basd in Palin. where detailed understanding of plant operations, logistics and personnel management were gained.Following detailed analysis of the quality of production and market trends, information pivotal in the decision to remove several hundred hectares of plantations from production was used by the partners of the business to re-focus the production areas developing further those areas on land batter suited to mango for fresh whole export.During this time working in a completely Spanish speaking environment permitted the development of use of Spanish as a second language to near 100% fluency.

Working as part of the tropical fruit crop investigations team on field projects with tropical fruit crops at the TREC IFAS facility in Homestead Florida. Working as lead technician for research on carambola and supporting work on limes, avocados, papaya, mango, litchi, longan minor tropical fruits (sugar apple, sapodilla, sapote, mamey sapote.During this period a basic understanding of Spanish was gained through lessons at Miami Dade Community College and use of local media.An unexpected experience was to be present in Homestead for the passing of Hurricane Andrew in August 1992, and during the clean up and rebuilding in the weeks following the disaster.
