It never ceases to amaze me the diversity of applications that our solutions can cover.The second area is more of a strategic role, helping to prepare our sales organisation to engage with customers. This challenge has led me to reposition our solutions in the minds of our channel, and embark on an ongoing campaign to implement sales activities. I love this visionary role and spend as much time talking commercial positioning as I do technical detail. This is where I have my biggest impact!

    My time at MSC Software was very engaging across all business areas.• I started off as a pre-sales guy, supporting the channel with entry level products fit for the designer.• This developed into a combined sales and technical role for the North of England as I lived in the North and could cover it easier than the Sales Manager.• Rather unexpectedly I found myself taking over the channel entirely for a year when a gap emerged. So I started out consolidating the channel; obtaining business plans from the VARs (which was new), making marketing plans (which was new), writing VAR contracts (which had lapsed!), all whilst still selling and providing technical support.• When we found my replacement, I moved back into the technical sphere and up into Enterprise level solutions with MSC.ADAMS, providing technical support, training, and consulting services for about a year.• Finally I moved back to a pre-sales role and covered more of the portfolio, like NASTRAN, PATRAN, MARC, etc.• I finished my time at MSC Software working in industry groups, primarily automotive spending much time with customers like JLR.

    Following graduation I was employed as a nuclear physicist, mostly because it sounded cool! In reality this involved a number of roles as part of the Graduate Training Scheme exposing me to many parts of this diverse business. Highlights included spending 4 months on the north coast of Scotland at the Dounreay Fast Reactor acting as prime contractor in the building of a decommissioning plant.18 hour days and 7 day weeks are tough, but the deep fried Mars bars and whisky help.More mundane activities included being a nuclear analyst or essentially a Fortran programmer, perfect for a physicist with Fortran skills but not that exciting! Ultimately I asked to get involved in something more…”Engineeringy”… and was placed in a new Simulation department using MSC Software tools as a means to support other parts of the business. This is where my love for simulation was found and being there from the beginning enabled me to help launch the business, both in our standard consulting tasks but also in services to the MSC Software sphere of influence (customers and VARs). Due to our nuclear and defence applications we became a Centre of Excellence for these tools in Europe, recognised by VARs and customers alike and it was not long before MSC Software asked me to join them to support this business directly.
